Who was the Best from the 60's to 70's

I have that April 1964 Hot Rod issue you have there. Thanks for the cool pics ! Ron

I'm not sure

Sinclair oil, been awhile!, cool, i wonder how many young guys wonder what the device is to open a old can of oil like that.. I remember once reading somewhere that a young guy wondered what the tire iron was, He thought it was some kind of a tool but didn't know for what! That was a long time ago but i never forgot about it, things like this that used to be the norm and the younger generation of car guys coming into the fun seeing these relics we once used.. Probably did the same back then ourselves, years pile up fast, anyone know what year that changed, into the plastic bottles? Mid-late 70s? lol..

I'm not sure but I would say early to mid 80's, maybe when almost all oil was in plastic containers...

What I don't get is how a 69 A-12 Bee ran a 13:56 while a A-12 RR ran a 12:91? One of them was either not running right, a poor driver, or the RR was a ringer. Either way, an A-12 has my vote for the top dog as these, unlike some other Mopars that were all out drag cars made for the street, the A-12's were purpose built street terrors.

I thought it was also impressive that the Poncho clan was able to get a machine like the '73 SD-455 TA to crank out a 13:54 ET during the smog era, which was actually faster than a 440+6 Chally.

As for that Trans AM running 13.54..........it was a ringer. Problem was road test et's were all over the place back then on the same kind of cars. Motor Trend claimed 13.38 on a 70 Buick GSX but Popular Hot Rodding got 14.20's from a GSX. Car Craft got 13.10 from a 70 Hemi Cuda but Popular Hot Rodding got 13.70's from a Hemi Cuda and some mags only 14's. And as was said 12.90's froma 69-1/2 six pack car when another mag got 13.50's. The tune could easily be way off back then as you had points that wore and when they wore the timing would retard and cars would slow down. Also carb adjustments ment alot.
Cars now are computer controlled and fuel injected and other then the driver most cars now would run within a tenth of themselfs. I mean one mag might get 13.20's from an SRT-8 and another maybe 13.31. There is not much that can change to make the performance that much different on cars today.
I looked hard for years to find road test of Max Wedge cars and I found Hot Rod got 12.69 @ 112 and Rodder and Street mag got 12.90 @ 110 out of 426 Maxie cars and Motor Trend got 13.44 @ 109 from a 413 car. This just means who ever finds the best road test info on the car they like can claim the fastest time it turned. One guy might say ....hey this car ran 13.66 and another might say ....no it only ran 14.24. There will never be a clearcut winner but it is fun talking about it. Ron

Yeah I remember seeing that one,
Peter Klute he's a Ford {especially Mustang's & Shelby's} somewhat a Chevy Guy & Exotic guy mostly,
not sure it was 100% non biased, but it was real world test

there was another one too...

wasn't it a LS6 454 70 Chevelle SS-454 that won the overall test ?,
braking, handling & acceleration IIRC

thanks for sharing

here another one from like 3 years ago
from Dream Car Garage & Peter Klute driving also

Dont forget engine tolerances. They were all over the board in the 60's. Pull a couple identical camaros or challengers off a dealer lot today and they will run virtually the same ET. Engines werent blueprinted in the day and could vary 15 to 20 hp from one car to the next.

Some folk say the 421 Pontiac Superduty Catalina

OR

The 1963 426 Max Wedge Cars....

Some say the 427 Thundebolt....

The one that I referenced was won by a RAIV GTO. It belongs to a fellow named Bruno who lives in Ontario, Canada. Very nice guy and a very nice car.

I cant remember where i read this but in 1969 the 340 barracuda with a automatic was one of the fastest cars out off the box running mid to high 11 sec 1/4 miles. They tweek it with slicks n some carb adjustments n it ran low 11.

RAM AIR IV BAD ***
RAM AIR V

Milt Schornak ran a 69' Gee TO in Florida, a cold wintery day and the Ram Air V Goat ran a 12.09
NOTE: Not production

no one until just recently {except a select few exotics/supercars}
even came close to the 11 second, 1/4 mile et. barrier
out of the box or from the factory, that weren't full on factory racecars,
in very limited #'s & not for street/hi-way use
especially back in the 60's & 70's

a few like Baldwin Motion or Yenko/Copo or Nickey Chevy or Mr. Norms Grand Spading Dodge offering cars
select non hi-way cars
like the Darts & Cuda in 1968 BO29 & LO23 from CarCraft/Hurst
even the RT's WO23's Super Stockers

this has been posted before, for those that didn't see it, it's pretty accurate
http://www.musclecarclub.com/musclecars/general/musclecars-50fast.shtml

the 69.5 RR that went 12.91 was a special prepped car, for the article &
headers special carbs/jets etc. & Ronnie Sox was the driver

back in the day when i was a kid I liked the 409 cars and the 421 s and then around 62 or 63 I liked the 413s and the 426 wedges then along came the 427 Chevy and the 427-428 -429 fords then the elephant motor the 426 Hemi but I diffidently like the 440+6 never really cared for the 396 or 454 but then thats just me
