Windshied Drains Into Interior

well the job went great the car was outside in the rain all day yesterday and she is dry as a bone.
thanls for the tip with the 3m auto bedding product

If you recall, I had this new windshield installed by Jerry's Glass (a man with 40-50 years in the automobile glass business) about 1-2 years ago and it has leaked ever since. I hired a local glass company, Eagle1 Glass, who came out today to remove the windshield. I needed to leave the windshield out for a few days until I cleaned the sealing surface and replaced the upper dash frame to cowl screws with new ones (the oem screws were zinc plated in case you are wondering). The old screws had been painted body color (copper) by the previous owner and stood out against the dark background color of the upper dash. The 2 guys from Eagle1 Glass noticed the gasket was not sealed to the frame with bedding compound as it is supposed to be. They said that's what it was leaking. They said they use bedding compound all the way around the frame and inside the gasket.

So, hopefully sometime next week I'll have my new AMD glass installed with no leaks.

Why I did my own, I knew it was done right.. with the correct materials. Not todays urethane heros. Make sure your Eagle Glass guys aren't using urethane either.

FYI, Chrysler only did the bottom and up the sides a few inches as shown in my first picture with the 8509 in place.

I will specifically request they use the 3M product mentioned in this thread. I saw that post but if they want to go the extra way around it won't hurt anything.

Nope.. I just noted that as to what was OE back in the day. You'll see I went all the way around on mine.

I read somewhere to let the gasket and bedding set for an hour or so before installing the glass. Is that necessary?

I put my new gasket in place dry, weighted / taped where necessary for about 3 days to let it get it's correct shape. Then as you can see in my pictures on page 2 only pulled back just enough to put the bedding compound down a section at a time and then installed the windshield right away. Hasn't leaked a drop.. but of course the car hasn't left the shop!! :canada:

The Eagle1 guy mentioned "soft seal" to seal the gasket to the frame. Any idea what he meant?

we put the 3 m stuff all around the frame and then he put in the glass , the stuff ouzes out a bit we just removed the excess and it perfect

My car has a total of 26 windshield molding (aka reveal) clips with 10 lower, 6 side, and 10 top clips. The side and top clips are the same size and the lower clips are bigger. The new clip sets only include 24 clips and screws. I can reuse 2 of the old clips but I am curious why I have extra top clips. My car has 10 holes across the top for clips. I suppose I am supposed to have 8.

Anyone have a photo of the clips installed across the top to see where my extra clips were installed?

Again.. they are using Urethane in that write up, so if you do use the 8509 bedding compound I wouldn't be following that part of their write up.

Clips.. I have 10 on the bottom 3 each side and 10 across the top on my '69 Bee.

I called the glass shop and they said there bedding compound is a cross between urethane and butyl designed for rubber gaskets.

You have the same number of clips I have. I wonder why the clip sets have 2 less top clips?

Because the repop guys don't care how much you swear at the end of the day. I was short clips as well, but fortunately had multiple sets around from different suppliers. Some are so crappy they don't even have enough tab for the trim to lock in place!

I can't help you with what your installer is using, take into consideration that 67belvedere just paid to have his recently installed (incorrectly) windshield removed and reinstalled using 8509 to get rid of his leaks. I expect your installer just wants to use what they like to use on newer cars and can't be bothered to go to NAPA for a 10 dollar tube of 3M8509.

when i git my car the rubber was very old and dry had silicone around the edge , so thats why i ordered a new rubber
when my glass guy installed it last year he said that the design is not great and it might leak , and it did that s why this yea i pulled it and we resealed it properly, dadsbee is right buy the tube and do it right , urethane just makes a mess and if you need to ever replace just the glass again you don't have to scape the rubber .

I found the installation instructions I was referring to about letting the gasket set for 1-2 hours before installing the glass.

The link above does not specify the actual sealant they used but they did refer to it as a urethane. Some feel that the urethane works but makes future removal very, very difficult. I keep reading about the #8509 sealant that is non permanent, not hardening. That seems to be popular as well.

The glass company I am using will use the urethane sealer. They guarantee no leaks. So, if it does leak, it's on them to clean everything and buy a new gasket for another attempt.

P.S. Even though I bought new clips for the back glass I will be using the old ones since they held the trim on before. I don't trust the new ones since everybody has trouble with them.
