Yet another tire size question

I have been digging through the tire posts looking for a specific setup, and I haven't seen what I'm looking for, so I am going to start yet another tire size thread.

This is my 68 coronet. http://i.imgur.com/zxQGeZT.jpg

Currently, the rear tires are an insanely wide set of 295/50/15
Front are 225/60/15

I am not going to spend money on wheels yet, as I need to do the interior and paint the car. I dont know anything about my current set of slots other than the fact that they're aluminum 15" wheels.

Im not with the car, so I cant measure anything, Sorry. I'm doing this from my desk, car is at a mechanics.

So. I'd like to buy 4 tires for under $400 for this car.

After much research, and in consideration of the fact that my 225 60 15 in the front rub a bit, I am considering going down to :

215/60/15 in front,
245/60/15 in the back.

Do you guys think this will look funny at all? I am going to end up buying cop wheels, and will have more control over the rim when I do. For now, I just need wheels to take it home from the shop, but something that I will have on there for a while.

Any advice, tips, suggestions would be appreciated.

245's are gonna look thin....at least 275's but I like the 295's....I usually run 205's on the front...400 for 4 tires is not going to happen
 
Any chance you have a pic handy of the 205's?

I think I'm going to take your advice on the rears. 295s in the rear, with 215s in the front, think that will look silly, handle strangely?

Here's a couple threads below for you...... Don't take this the wrong way but being your tires are the end game on how exactly your car takes to the pavement, i'd spend a little more money if needed and base your tires off of handling/traction/reliability and not dollar amount. Just my 2 cents...Good luck

Don't worry about me taking something the wrong way, there are a couple of ways to learn, getting offended by advice is not one of them hahah

I hear you propwash, but these are really temporary tires, and will likely be put on some other car when I buy my cop wheels.
I'm not gonna pony up big cash just to get it in the paint shop and get oversprayed.

Most guys run bigger than 215, but My current 225s rub, I have a feeling its the rim offset, as I know nothing about the wheels.

I was able to find some cobras for $60 a pop, gonna jump on those for the front, and leave the 295s out back.

I'll save my money there, and buy a whole set of good meats and wheels to put them on, preferrably the same size all around with a touch of rake in the back from springs or shackles. Eventually custom springs, or add a leaf, etc.

I just spent a tone getting the car running, appreciate the posts below though, I've seen most of them, I just wanted to ask again because of my car's particular stance.
 
:thumbsup: I gotcha....Heck, I got used old tires from a local tire shop to motivate my bird around till my fresh rubber finally made it to the rims.
 
Dropping to a 215 you are narrowing the tire by 10mm (13mm = 1/2")...and decreasing diameter by 1/4"...assuming tread wear the same on old & new tires. I doubt the (front) tires aren't rubbing because of width, but likely because of the wheels' back-spacing. The original wheels had 4.5" back-spacing while those slots look to have about 3"? Depending on where the contact is occuring (I'm guessing the firewall when the wheels are turned?), changing tires will do little to stop the rubbing.

You mentioned paint & interior work to be done. Are you planning to drive the car or work on it? If work on it, don't waste money on tires and wheels to roll about a shop. Their just going to get dust (scratches), body filler (scratches), and overspray on them anyways.

If it's because they don't hold air, put some tubes in. It's not permanent, but a LOT cheaper than tires you may not keep.

I'm not buying wheels to roll it around, just tires. Hence the $60 coopers.

Good advice, thank you for that. I do think its a rim dimension that is making the tires rub, but like I say, I will be buying new rims later, so I'll have more control then.

Plus, I have other cars I can use these 15s on, when I buy my full set with wheels.
Sad to hear changing the tires wont help with the rubbing much, this was my suspicion as well. Still, can't beat the price.
I'll just have to live with them for a little while. I wont be driving it much while its getting interior and paint. just needs to move.
