Zinc additive w/zinc in the oil??

Rotella and all other 15w-40 diesel motor oils had about 1300 ppm zink until the last oil re rating in 2011 due to diesel exhaust catalysts being used for the latest federal emission standard going into effect on diesel engines. It now has about 7-800 PPM. To low for flat tappet lifters. I know because we had to switch over our bulk tanks and over counter oil to the new oil standard in our commercial truck shop. You shouldn't be running 15w-40 in a gas engine anyway because the additive package is not fully compatible with the by products of gas combustion.

Went to summit today, They are now selling their house brand with ZDDP for 6.99 a quart.
Dollar cheaper than Joe Gibbs Driven. Interested to know who blends their oil...

As long as the Diesel oil meets or exceeds the current spec for gas engines its fine to use. Many do some dont.

Valvoline racing oil still good?

The VR1 is still good to use. It's a race oil so doesn't have much detergent in it so it needs changed more frequently.

I've run Rotella in my older engines. My 1974 box stock 360 Power Wagon only see's Rotella, no issues...seems happy with it.

That's the first I've heard of that, how? My understanding is zinc is a cushion lubricant for higher metal on metal friction under pressure ( like lifters)
You are 100 percent correct it builds film strength like you say in a way cushion. The added value comes from the anti oxidation for protecting cylinder walls from pit corrosion from acids caused by condensation that forms on cylinder walls when the oil is cold. The Government pushed the limits on Zinc down to stop fouling cat converters without caring about our collector cars.. Diesels engines must have very high zinc to fight friction on cam followers and the corrosion issues with cylinder walls caused by acids formed during cool down and the water common in diesel by pass gases mixing with sulfur creates sulfuric acid in crank case.

I run Rotella as well and just emailed them yesterday to ask for the current ZDDP levels. I'm not holding my breath for an answer, but will post it if I get one.
