Ran into something that made my jaw drop the other day. Some one was selling a project 70 roadrunner on ebay, priced at 6500. The car was only worth about 3000 in my opinion, so I offered that. The response I got was less than logical at times.
"You are right when you say the car is onl;y worth 3000, but the additional parts, fenders, sheet metal and engine run over 6000. These cars are worth 75-100 thousand when put together"

The car by the way, is a complete project, needing quite a bit. It is a typical roadrunner with few options, none extraordinary by any means.
 
I guess it would be pointless to argue with someone like that. "hey buddy, where did you get that price from?"

Or "hey dude, why don't you put it together and sell it for $75k and make yourself a bunch of money?

I guess he was is doing us a favor and selling it at a low price so we can make the big bucks. What a guy!
 
I'm pretty sure 99% of you out there know this already, But yeah it might be worth $75k-$100k if it was a Hemi RR & a 100pt concourse car, not a rotting rusted hulk of a base model RR, let alone a tore apart "project"... As many of you guys well know, It cost as much to restore them as they are worth now or can/will sell for especially for a base model 383ci RR... Unless you do all the work yourself & find some storming good deals on parts... Or it's a solid rot/rust free Southwestern or Calif. car to start with, or stored it's whole life in a climate controlled garage... I know it's not always about the money spent or it's worth when finished, sooner or latter it "is or will be thou"... Unless you plan on keeping it, want a long term project, can get it really cheap... Don't get me wrong, I love RR's especially 68-69's I've owned 13 of them now, I have far more in my current 68 RM23 HT 383/479ci6bbl 727 auto project Calif. car, that was nearly completely rust free car, that had 63k miles when I bought it in 2005 the peak of the market for $6k, running & driving complete titled car, {that needed allot of dents & a big crease repairs}, that it will never/ever sell for, what I have in it, let alone the time, the engine cost, the shipping costs, time searching for parts, many, many hr's in the garage, many, many hr's doing research for my specific combo etc.... but I'm not planning on selling either...
 
Some parts listed here are outrageous. Too high. Why abuse an enthusiast when you can get a fair price, and get a part to a buyer who needs it? 3 Grand for a grille? Gouge. Baloney. If it were ME, I would sell it to a car guy for what I have in it.

The truth of the matter is that not everyone is an informed buyer OR seller.... this guy can most likely find a buyer if he holds out long enough that knows as little as he does about value and get his asking price.

When I originally bought my RR I feel what I paid was fair... truth be told if I was informed as I am now I would have had some leverage to probably pay a bit less but the seller was actually trying to get more money out of me (yup that's right) Any part or car is worth as much as the market will dictate so if this guy holds out and gets his price then he can laugh all the way to the bank and you just have to hold out for the next one at a fair price! I'm playing this game right now with my 383... I don't want to give it away and I know in my area in Canada Mopar big blocks aren't readily available... I've already turned down 2 offers that would be considered fair but it's my engine and I think I'll get what I want for it!
 
But you can always tell when your prices are too low because it sells in the first 15 minutes and the ad gets a half dozen hits within the hour! Ask me how I know this lol

Lol this is essentially what happened to me when I went to buy my car.... I hate haggling and the asking price for my car was fair (22k)... I was the first guy to go look at it apparently within hours of it being posted... I liked what I saw and offered full asking price and I guess seeing this the seller thought he underpriced the car so told me he would "hold out and try to get more money but would keep my number" I said "Fair enough and I will keep shopping" and left...

2 weeks later he calls me up whining to me about tire kickers and if I want the car I could still have it for full ask.... I replied "making me wait cost you 2 grand... my offer is now 20 and I have my eye on another car.. take it or leave it" Obviously he took it!
 
Even tho I don't much like to haggle either, I will do it if I want something bad enough but I also got into a similar situation with a guy with a Challenger that advertised it in the local newspaper and then wanted more once I got there. Seems someone told him it was worth much more (it wasn't) and I reminded him that he was breaking the law by doing what he was trying to do. I left and told him to check into it. Seems that others also did the same because he called me back and said he checked into it and was ready to sell me the car at the advertised price.

Also, I lucked out on a 71 340 Cuda that was advertised in 86 for 3500. It had a newly rebuilt 340 and had the paper work on it but the interior sucked and the trans was tired but he wouldn't budge on the price so I walked but threw his number into my desk drawer. A year later when I was cleaning out my desk, I ran across his number thinking there's no way the number is still good but it was and he still had the car....and it had a rebuilt transmission now and it was still for sale but for 2500. I'll be right over!! Kept that car for 15 years. If it's meant to be, it'll happen is all I can say :)
 
Lots of people think they have gold when selling things,I see many vendors on Ebay constantly relisting the same item at an outrageous price. Why they don't get the message that they are overpricing is beyond me.
 
Everyone says they are an enthusiast, car nut, hot rod guy, but what that means is 95% of the time they are into buying low and selling high (AKA flipper). A cheap paint job on a rusty barn find, mags from Summit and suddenly it's $100K!! Parts are gold plated too! I'm not into loosing money on stuff, but if I'm lucky to get my parts money back (or most of it) after plenty of seat time I think I did well. The big picture is another classic was released into the wild in much better condition then when I found it. Yep, fixing everyone else's "restoration" one car at a time. My Ford buddy says I need to take my collection of vintage intakes and carbs to the swap meet so I can have the best swap meet day ever. To him I reply "I'm not dead yet and may use that stuff on something." Some people like paintings. I like car parts on the wall. I have a 66 hemi Charger that I don't think is worth $100K, and can't sell it at $60K. So I will do the next best thing. Pull the motor and make it into a pump gas 472, add A/C, an overdrive gear set and EFI and drive the wheels off it. Why? Because I'm a car guy and marginal will not do.
 
People keep setting their prices after watching Barrett-Jackson the night before. Like someone noted earlier; If its not a Hemi, 6 pack ect. then its worth something, but not worth what you just saw a 70 Hemi Charger sell for at the auctions. If someone has a project that needs lots of parts to finish & they want to sell then they could make just as much money parting it out then selling the hull last.

What I'm seeing is the parts/project market is going through much the same thing as the restored car market. And just like with the restored guys, some people are getting the message sooner than others.

I bought my 74 Road Runner two years ago, and I sold the Rallye cluster (standard 120 one) for $340, and a spare set of 14" Rallyes with no centers or rings for $200. I month or so ago, I found a guy selling a Rallye with a 150 speedo and a clock, and it came with a tach to replace the clock, all for $125. I thought awesome! That's less than what a tach costs! I can buy the set up, replace the clock with the speedo, put it in my car and sell my old unit for $300 or so and make money off the upgrade (I love doing that!) But I go on ebay, and no one is buying Rallye clusters. I went back 90 days, and only cluster had actually sold and it was fully restored one that probably cost $600 to restore and sold for a little over $300. There's a guy here in Jax that has five 14" Rallye wheels that he's been trying to sell for months. He started at $200 and now he's down to $80.

The restoration party is over, and the last one out gets stuck with the check. :) After not seeing scant project cars on the market around here, they've been popping up like weeds for the past six months or so. Some are priced well, but there's a lot of leprechauns in the project car trade as well. That's fine. They can sit on their pot-o-gold while everyone else unloads their stuff. :)

I still love Nino!! Howard Stern Sucks. Couldn't hold the Grease's jock strap !!

I've got 40 or so Greaseman clips on the MP3 player I use in my Road Runner so I can listen to Greaseman when I drive just like I did in the 1980s.
 
Another big problem so many cars are being shipped off shore to Sweden and Australia and Germany. People are driving the prices up cause their is a cult growing in Europsee to own one of our Mopars. The Chargers are getting more expensive.
