My BUDGET 451 build... finally

Great thread, I'm running a 451 as well and if it makes you feel any better I've had no detonation at all running 9.8:1 (160 psi) with ported 452 iron heads and a rather small cam. My motor likes a little more timing than suggested, actually it's seams to run it's best just locked in at 36 (Backing the initial off results in sluggish acceleration). I plan on getting it on the dyno early spring to get it dialed in now that I'm confident in the setup as far as carb and distributor goes.

The cam is a Comp solid lifter 110 lobe separation, .488 int .501 ex, 268 duration, 1,500-5,800 rpm

the engle k65 solid i use in my 65 coronet, 3.23 gear/slushbox, will absolutely fry the tires from a 20mph roll in first gear. low maintenance, easy on parts.

Although its a little bit off of what the OP is building i have a 383 (450 stroker) i just built. It will actually be run on the dyno next week so i can report some actual numbers. My build is a 450 stroker, bored .030 over, Lunati #10230703 cam (.494/.513) Roller Rockers, Stealth heads, Holley Street Dominator intake, Holley 770 Street Avenger carb, Dougs Headers.

I can report back what kind of numbers it put out next week.

Sounds like a great combo, definitely report back, I'd love to see what kind of power it makes.

Hey fellas, what's a good gasket kit to use? I've been hunting around and it seems they all are missing something or other. Looking for decent head gaskets for the aluminum heads about 0.040 crushed thickness. Also looking for a decent rear main seal with those side pieces to be included if possible.

Funny, we are all pretty much right in the same ballpark with our combinations. It'd be great to get all of our dyno results in one spot. Boy we keep going and Josh's gonna have no choice but to turn this thread into a 451 sticky lol.

PS: HT413...
What is the RPM range for that Lunati Cam?

Hey ski, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Cam has a range of 2200-6400 and they recommend a stall of about 2800 if I recall.

And IIRC, I sold a 557 cam to someone on here about that time so maybe it was to you? Oldtimes is setting in hard lol

Nope, not me. Funny but I did buy a 557 cam kit with ductile iron rockers, 440 source timing chain and some other things from another member like 2 years ago. Can't remember the member name but it was definitely not you. I sold off the cam and kept the rest. Rockers and 440 source timing set from that purchase will be going on this build in fact.

Wow, I just found this thread. Pretty cool. I hope you weren't referring to me as the trusted source.?
I have a nylon thrust button on my cam. I don't remember what the clearance between it and the timing chain cover is supposed to be but I used clay to figure out the spacing. I had to shave the button down a few times to get it correct. I had seen where people would weld a washer to the outside of the timing chain cover to stiffen it up. I had no room to fit a washer between the cover and the wp housing so I left it as it was. It seems to work fine for me that way.
I have the same heads and use the Fel-pro 1009 head gasket. Its .039 compressed thickness.

Yeah,
HT413s thread is GREAT...
Lots of good info...

I'm parallel building my 67 GTXs 440 with this thread...
My cam decision soon to follow

Thanks for submitting that build IQ52

Yeah in hindsight, maybe 'trusted' wast quite the word. :) since I mentioned that about the roller cam I decided I'd stick with a hydraulic flat tappet.

Geez, now I feel like that guy with some old girlfriend's name tattooed on my arm.

When I take this one out, I'll put it in the 440 that I going to build for Amish_bobby's Coronet. Easy enough. I still have to see if I'm going to have the money to swap it out this year.

If all goes as planned I'd like to get it dynode next Summer. I couldn't afford it back when I built it because I had a whole resto going on to worry about but now it's done..............that is after I get a Viper tranny transplanted in it! I suspect I'll be bringing up the rear with mine in the HP department.

HT543 next?

Lol before that happens I'll be HT-turbo-451.

I don't know if this will help at all, but, here is the story of the first engine my son and I built together. Just happens to be a 451.

Awesome story, IQ. Very cool how driven your son was/is to learn. Only way to learn.

Makes a lot of sense. I vote for donating your short block to the Amish One and you build a stroker. All I want for Christmas is 100 cubic inches.

Hmmmm.

This turned out to be an awesome thread with a pile of great info HT413. I know you have seen these #'s, but I thought I would post what my combo made if others are curious - hope you don't mind.

dyno pull 001.jpg

400 block bored .040, 440 Source 451 stroker kit, 10:1 compression with flat top pistons, 440 Source Stealth heads(surfaced and a valve job), Holley 770 Street Avenger, Comp XE282 solid cam, 1.5 roller rockers, Edlebrock RPM Performer intake, 6 quart Hemi oil pan, Firecore distributor, orange electronic ignition box, Melling hv pump. We also did the same test with a Holley 850 double pumper. It gave an additional 8 hp & 8 ft.lbs. over these numbers.

That's a nice little torque machine.

What compression are you running?

Forgot to mention that at first. 10:1

Our builds are really close. When you account for the lash of your solid, I think our cams are even in the same ballpark in duration.

Great to hear the 770 carb didn't give up too much vs the 850. I was thinking With holley 750 I might be losing a lot, but hey, maybe not. I wonder how the 750 vac secondary compares to your street avenger.

770 vacuum and 750 vacuum have same venturii, throttle bores and boosters. 770 has few more gadgets. shouldn't be any power difference between them if both are optimized. in my opinion both are small for 450 cubes, but if it's what you have go for it.

okey dokey, just ordered bearings, gasket set, freeze plug kit and... CAM and lifters. Cam research is officially over (until the next time lol.)

:hello2: :headbang:

Just picked up a 440source dampener at a sweet deal from moparts. Read good things about them, though not a fan of the polished look.
