The weird tires thing is an extreme version of what is called "hella flush". Each generation has stupid crap that they think is cool, and I believe this is one of those stupid ideas. Having said that, I will go into my perspective on this subject.
Lets face it, our old cars they are not cheap to own! If I would not have joined the Army, all but one of my cars would have been financially out of reach. Many of the kids we are putting into the Army these days may have a decent job, but it does not allow paying for expensive rust repairs and full vehicle restorations of 40+ year old cars. They cetainly have almost no way of affording a finished car.
For $3000, kids these days can buy a Honda (with no rust!) with only a little less power than some of our smaller v-8's back in the day. I've had soldiers who had some of these cars and we would talk either in the parking lot, or at the on base auto craft shop when I would be working on one of my cars. I had a few try to BS me, but when they talked to me and I educated them on my cars, they usually cut the BS out. One guy I know had a legit 11 second supercharged (surprisingly no turbo) civic. Sure there are the idiots with the fart can and air intake who say they run tens(morel ike 18's), but there are many of the tuner guys who know what they are doing and have legitimately good performing cars. I got embarrassed by a turbo Honda CRX one day on the freeway back in 2002 while driving my Mach 1.
I love the rumble of a good v-8 and the true artistic styling of the older cars. Some people don't like it and find it outdated. These other car guys are hotrodding their cars, but just in a different way. It's not my style but in the end, we are just trying to have fun with our cars.
