oil change and engine not priming

This ^^^^^^^

I fill the filter full, let it sit as the oil will get soaked into the filter. Top it off and let it sit some more, then install it. I find this holds about 2/3rd's of a Qt. I've never had a problem with low pressure doing this with a oil change. Good Luck
I fill mine about half and lube the seal. It’s kinda hard to maneuver it quickly without spilling. More so now that the Hotchkis forward curb feeler is in place.

If you remove filter and let it sit for a couple of hours and put filter back on you can lose your prime in oil pump. Ask me how know. Two options remove pump and put heavy oil in it. Also remove oil plug by pressure sending unit and put oil in through there.
Fran,I would pull the distributor and gear and prime it before taking the pump off!!I now use a system one filter, pop the cap and pull the filter,,,inspect, clean and reinstall.

That's why I let it sit to soak in, tons cleaner without the spillage.

I go on the list, who install the oil filter dry, except a wipe of oil on the rubber seal.
I've been fooling with these things for 50 years. Unless the oil pump is flat wore out, even with the filter off, the pump holds it's prime. Just don't take four days to do it!
Also have never 'packed' a pump, simply oiled up good, mount it, then pre-oil.

If the engine has been sitting for years, yes, pre-oil. Otherwise, should have oil pressure in a matter of seconds.

Take the volume of the pressure side of the oil system. Oil pump, galleries, bearings, rocker shafts. My guesstimate, 1 pint or less. Except for the filter. Filter capacity can be anywhere from a pint to well over a quart. How many rotations of the oil pump to fill that filter? And the pump spins at half the crankshaft speed. At a nice slow 600 rpm idle that crank spins at 10 times per second. So a few seconds extra of no pressure can easily mean 20-30 revolutions without oil.

Guess I've been defying the odds for the last 50+ years. The only time I fill an oil filter is when breaking a new engine in on the run stand or in the car.
Other than that, if it's been sitting for years, I'll pull the distributor and drill for oil pressure. Pressure drops to zero as soon as the drill stops. By the time you re-stab the distributor, adjust timing and fire it off, it'll take a few seconds for oil pressure to build again.

Agreed. It’s more a mental health issue for me. I need to know that I snugged the filter hand tight and the gasket was lubed. Also that i snugged the drain plug. Nobody touches but me. I number the oil quarts to be sure. You know, **** stuff like that.

sorry did not start engine just turned over with starter
Even with dual 990cca batteries, my Autometer mechanical gauge will not indicate pressure while cranking. Upon starting, it instantly shows pressure. I am using Royal Purple synthetic 5W30 with a K&N premium filter. The weight of oil to run has the most to due with bearing clearances and intended use. My engine shows very similar oil pressure whether I'm using 5W30 or 20W50 and whether the outside temperature is 40* or 110*.
I think if it had good pressure during the break-in I would just go ahead and start it. I'll bet the pressure comes right up.

Cold starts hit the 60 psi mark before it gets enough fuel to fire on. If using a mechanical gauge do not know what voltage has to do with the oil pressure reading?

I believe he means it is spinning fast with 2 batteries

??? Obviously, voltage has nothing to do with the reading on a mechanical gauge. And, as hangnOut ^^^^said, I just was saying my engine turns over at a pretty good clip...
