What size Oil Restrictor

Any updates?

Here is a video of the new Comp Spotsman Lifters 96829B-16 installed and primed. Looks like the oil flow is about half what the Crower lifters were letting out. Hope it's enough of an improvement.


Here's a couple pictures I took to compare the 2 Lifters.

Well, it’s an improvement for sure....... but still more than I’d “prefer” to see.

The used 87019’s I have here have a .028” feed hole to the axles....... and I bet there can be a pretty good flow of oil going through that size hole.

I think the new lifters would show an improvement in the oil presssure.

Did you put smaller restrictors in the heads?

After watching the video a few times........ at the beginning you see the oil start to flow from between the wheel and the strut, then it starts flowing from what looks like between the lifter body and the bore....... like there is excessive clearance.

Have you tried a “wiggle test” with both the lifter and bore clean and dry?

If it’s still apart, and you had a friend with a pair of 829’s you could borrow....... I’d try them in that same pair of bores and see what you got.....”just to see”.

Yea, I was hoping the body diameter of the Comp lifters would have been a bit larger then the Crower but the Comps are actually .00045 smaller, Which is a minute amount I know, but still. They felt good in there. Could it have been a .001 tighter probably, but nothing I'm going to fix at this point.

As far as the restrictor goes..... I installed a .062 restrictor and it's still lots of oil pouring down the sides, you can see it in the video. I'm thinking to go to .050 and see what happens.

I also opened up the pushrod passages, clearanced the rockers, and resized the pushrods, so going back together tonight. Hopefully I have good oil pressure and no noise and I'll be a happy camper. Trying to get out to Ocean City maryland foe the Cruisn show on May 17. Don't need anymore head aches.

Judging by the oil running down the block, I’d say a .050 restrictor wouldn’t be a problem.

Pushrods were to long after switching from the crower lifters to the comps. Pushrod seat is higher on the Comp lifters.

Better then to short though......only 82 bucks to resize at Smith Brothers.

I checked with one of my customers who runs those 96829B-16 lifters in an unbushed 440 block.
His motor uses the stock “through the cam” oiling to the heads.

Hot oil pressure is 25psi@700rpm, jumps to 60psi@1000rpm, then from 1500-2000rpm and up its 70-75psi.

I would agree you still have a little more Oil coming out/around the Lifter in the Bore itself than we normally see(Lifter Bore Clearance), but it shouldn't be an issue to adequate oil Pressure at either idle or rpm using a 20-50 Oil.
Ditto the .050" Restrictors like Dwayne said, should be fine.

That still seems like a river of oil coming down from the heads.

I suppose if the feed hole to the axles on those lifters are as big as the 87019’s I checked(.028”)......... they could flow that much oil just through those holes.
Look how much oil is coming down from the heads....... and that’s only one .062” hole per side.

Actually that's with .052 hole in the heads. I took the .062 out. I'm going down to .046.......
 
Interesting thread. I’ve always run .040 restrictors in the indy feeds with no issues. As to the lifters, there’s not a lot of choices besides the 829 on an unbushed block. I understand the failure difference between a bushing lifter and a needle bearing lifter, but I don’t understand the recent fear of using the needle bearing lifters. If the valvetrain is setup correctly, there shouldn’t be any abject failure of the bearing over the bushing assuming we’re not talking extreme applications. I ran a set of 829s in a street/strip build for nearly a decade with no issues.
 
Actually that's with .052 hole in the heads. I took the .062 out. I'm going down to .046.......

You just want to make sure the feed hole to the top is big enough to allow for oil to be pushed uphill and reach the front of the rocker shafts, at hot idle, while there is a bunch of leakage from around every rocker.
 
Too bad we never got a follow up report on the oil pressure and valvetrain noise situation with this combo.

Are there any updates?
 
Hi Guys, So been running good with the Comp sportman rollers, Oil pressure at hot idle (900 rpm) aaround 20psi, At 1500 rpm jumps to 45psi. still a bit on the noisy side but I checked and double hecked and it's just the way it is. Even tried opening the lash to .020 hot and while it does feel stonger it doesnt change the noise level. I have a work around though, I was running very large 20" long UltraFlow muffler for a truck on it and decided to just get the loudest f'ing race muffler I can find. That should fix it up. Car runs good though, Goes consitaint 10.70's all motor at over 4,000 lbs with me in it.

I found this video doing a web search for the solid roller lifters Comp Cams 96829B my builder picked for my BMP RB 572. I was concerned about oiling the lifters at idle and in stop and go traffic which I'm guaranteed to be in at Cruisin the Coast for a week each year.
I'm going to read through this thread, but I seem to see that they worked ok?

Before going thru my Engine the lifter bores were bushed but very sloppy. .003" or more. The axle feed hole was exposed when on the base circle by about .050". It is pushrod oiled with aprox .050" restrictors (roll pins) in each pushrod. Always had decent oil pressure 35psi or so at idle. WOT was adjusted down to 70psi. Now it has new bushings that skirt down and cover the axle feed hole sized to .0015" clearance. Idle pressure is around 60psi. WOT is now over 80psi and will be adjusted down. This is with notched lifters (band to pushrod feed hole). Not to mention 16 .050" orifices.

@dvw Always good to hear from you. All of "that" I will leave to my engine builder. Fortunately he is Mopar experienced and Bill Mitchell himself spoke highly of his abilities, and he has done builds using the BMP block. Since he chose the lifters, I'm sure he will do all the things needed for them to function properly for my application.
