Hemi vs L88

SPANKED!!!! Both cars are nice but that hemi really comes into its own on the top end. Really interesting to see how the front ends of both cars was waaay up there.

I agree plus I think he got some wheel spin, those 4.56 gears while fun on the street did not help him on the top end.

that Vett does not weigh crap compared to the Bee

66-70 B bodies are built for drag racing. All that rear overhang works great for weight distribution.

---- In 1966, I had a 66 - L79 Nova, and My Buddy had a Hemi Satellite - both 4 speeds. On the highway, in the Country, We had a marked quarter mile ( Shhh !!). In the qtr. the 2 cars were, pretty much, equal - He'd win -- I'd win, but beyond the qtr. I was all done, and His tail lights would disappear in the distance. -- BTW - That was "The Good Ole Days".

why were the et's close but such a wide spread in mph through the traps

-- Yep !! -- The Hemi starting coming on farther down the track and kept on - coming on, shortly, it was bye, bye. -- Sorry - I guess that You were referring to the Vette vs, the Hemi.

69 vett 3245 lbs 68 Bee 4109 lbs big difference in weight

That L88 is sweet - but nothing has it over the Elephant. I’d take the Bee hands down!

Excellent question. One of two things, either ferocious sandbagging by the hemi driver, or he is so unfamiliar with racetrack layout that he was shutting off at the mph light, 66 feet in front of the finish line. Mid elevens should be 115-117 mph. Ideal e.t. for the corvettes 120mph would be eleven ohs.
105mph would normally get mid to high twelves.

Ooh, bench racing!

Hemi ran out of rpm and the Vette can't drive. Fix the obvious and they will both run high tens all day. 11.50s for the Hemi traps at 112-116. Not 106.
With a mph around 120, the Vette should trap at 10.80s or so. I'm giving that fat *** Hemi 10.90s.

At the end of the day the Hemi is worth north of $100k. That L88 is selling for $300k. I don't think I would change a thing on the Vette. Maybe the driver.
Hemi either has too much gear or running out of fuel.

-- I agree, it could be done, but it would take quite a bit of fix'n. -- Here's some info for the late 60s into 70. --

you've gotta wonder who was driving these things! #6 on the list is an 11.5 sec. car all day every day!

It definitely sounds like the hemi was lifting early and coasting through the traps...explains the low MPH.

Below is a comment from the youtube video...

just to make clear to everyone,, the superb ee is a .030 over bore, .015 stroke 11.5 compression, .480 lift at the valve Legal engine according to pure stock rules. It has made 715 horse power on the dyno with exhaust manifolds. It is the fastest pure stocker. it has ran as quick as 10.87 at 129 mph. The car has 250lbs of ballistic for this race. No wheel spin , and I am playing with the L88 at the finish line . Just enough to stay ahead. I should know , I built it for Rick Mahoney from PA. I'm not a true Mopar man ,, but performance like this can not be ignored! I've been around drag racing my entire life. I've learned that they all can be amazingly fast if you know what you are doing. Yep! 715hp is just a little bit more than what stock was for that year. :screwy:

The Bee is Rick Mahoneys being driven by Pontiac restoration guru Scott Tiemman. It has no roll bar. 11.50 is it's legal limit. Pure stock and NHRA wont allow any quicker. Trust me this car is VERY well prepared and capable of going much quicker. Not you average Hemi car. And no way its 4190lbs.

-- Remember, in 1966 Bill Jenkins set the A Stock World record in His 66 - L79 Nova, at 11.66. At that time He battled with His friend, Gere Stahl, who had a 66 Hemi Belvedere, and both of them were above 11.66. -- I have had several Muscle Cars, over the Years, and the majority of them were 13, and 14 second cars. A 12 second car was rare, in street trim.
