Am i crazy (Driving 69 Satellite from Kentucky to Oregon)?

My buddy took a bus from Michigan to the bottom of Georgia to drive home a dodge marada . He had no driver license no wipers wrong plate and it rained most of the way home...he ran out of fuel and a cop gave him a ride for fuel and never even asked to see his license.....he got lucky. Haha... that's funny. I know i don't have a heater since the hoses are bypassed. Got the other things covered i think and got a 20 day temporary registration for the car so i don't have to be paranoid about getting pulled over.

Buy a case of NAPA gold fuel filters (3032) and several feet of 5/16” fuel hose And new clamps so when they start plugging you won’t be walking. Change the filter and rubber hoses and clamps before you leave. The Current filter may be half plugged or decades old and falling apart inside. You don’t want your carb plugged up. With fresh hoses it will be very easy to change on the side of the road. This rock hard old hoses aren’t easy to work with.

Any fuel will run a 318, and forget the additives. The ethanol gas of today will allow any water to mix in and get run through the system. Don’t run it down very low before filling it again. But the gauge may not work anyway. So carry a couple gallons So you can until you figure out how far you can go before walking.

you don’t need any seafoam or marvel mystery oil.

Definitely change the oil before you leave and carry several extra quarts so you don’t run out.

If it's still running points I would take a look at those before I went anywhere and take a peak under the cap.

One thing about points... If it's still running points check the gap but leave the set thats in there in there... Don't replace them just trying to be proactive... There have been a lot of failures of new condensers & points... The old stuff ran well enough to get the car down the road.... If you want to change them find new old stock parts... They do still exist & they work well...

If you do come thru Nebraska, don't be hauling any drugs, they will catch you on I-80. Usually every week or 2 they have a big drug bust on I-80. Though it's usually Californians headed east. And they do go to jail!

Most of your advice was good but this makes no sense.
If your reasoning is that being low on gas means you'll suck up something in the tank...Guess what? The fuel pickup is like the oil pickup in the engine....It always draws from the bottom. Water weighs more than gasoline so any water that is in the system, if it hasn't already mixed, is at the bottom and being sucked in long before you're down to the last gallon.

Tires are said to be ok but i won't know until i get there. Hopefully they're in decent shape and don't have flat spots or dry rot. Good question about the spare too. I'll have to check that.

I will definitely add some fuel line and clamps to my list. Ordered a couple fuel filters but might not be a bad idea to get a couple more. Also have a spare fuel pump.

I'll check the points but leave them alone. I do have an extra set of points and condensor but they aren't originals. Just some stuff from rockauto.

I originally started this post back in January i think but on the advice of members here, i put off the trip until spring. I'm hoping for the best on the tires but we'll see. It's a car i purchased from 2000 miles away so i never got to check it out in person but did have a local car guy that has done restorations check it out for me. At the time i was more focused on the body, frame, etc and didn't think to have him check the tires although he didn't say anything bad about them. Hopefully they're in decent shape with no flat spots.

Guess what? I’ve done this many times and when the filters plug up and the engine quits is when the car runs out of fuel. Happened to me many times. Just sharing real world experience.

Good to know. I plan one filling up at no less than 1/4 of a tank. It'll give me a chance to check the fluids more often too.

Glad you waited for the better weather. With this thinking ahead and looking over the car before starting out you could have a good trip home.

Bring some warm clothes because sitting still driving a car with no heater you can get cold, no movement to get the blood flowing and building heat.
