We have a new house with 1/2 acre on the side where we are building a 35' x 40' shop. I got a quote from a concrete company for $13,500 + tax to form and pour. Yikes!

So I formed it with the help of the wife and kids.

Now I'm going to admit pouring it really really sucked. 23 yds, so 3 trucks worth. The first bit was on the dry side so we had them add water to the mix to allow it to flow better. It is no where near perfect, couple low spots, and rough is some places. To me, well worth saving $8000 though. We are going to epoxy it once it is seasoned so we can use leveler prior.

The building is about $17k delivered and set up. Going to have 2 roll up doors, 10 foot high and a good sized area for some workout equipment. No plans for a lift, just room to work on some cars and store parts and tools.

nice work and yep so much cheaper if you can do it yourself. Im so jealous

I'd reconsider the lift, makes working on cars so much more enjoyable, especially as you get older. Even if all you do is oil changes and brake work, still worth it IMO.

You can get a nice 2 post lift for a quarter of the amount you saved on the slab.

that lift is solid gold if you are going to work on cars and i know you will be working on cars.that back gets older every day, think about it.

The only issue with installing a lift is moving it when we move out. We'll be here maybe a maximum of 5-6 years.

How thick is the concrete? If not at least 6 inches, a car lift could damage the cement. How deep are the footers? It doesn’t show up in the pics, that’s why I ask.

Four post lift is portable and money well spent. I have no regrets on my purchase.

5 1/2" thick
Footer area is about 8" around the parameter. I wasn't planning for a lift so I didn't add in more where it would go.

This guy is building a bad *** new shop and everyone is hung up on him not getting a lift?!?! Besides, if he wants one down the road he can always just get a portable one post lift like me. I like that I can take it outside when I want to also. To the OP, your shop is going to be awesome and I look forward to watching the progress. Are you insulating the walls and ceiling?

That looks nice.
I plan on insulation but I still don't have a building purchased. Leaning to an assembled metal shop but I am waiting for a response to one of the quotes I requested. One I got back was $26k just for materials. I can stick build myself for about $9k with me doing the work but I would rather have one done for me.

What did you do for your floor? Looks nice. Burned-in or ground and polished

Not to hijack threewood's thread, but can you give us a manufacturer and model of the single post portable lift? Thanks!

The floor was just power troweled. I have coated it since then.

HawkRod, the lift brand is iDeal see the picture of a current eBay listing. Unfortunately like a lot of things these days prices have gone crazy. I paid about $3900 delivered a year and a half ago for it. I like that I can take it outside when I want to use it there and I can move the lift to a car a lot easier than I can the car to the lift sometimes. I have heated floors in my shop so a 2 or 4 post lift was out of the question anyway.

Very exciting stuff. Mine is supposed to be started in one week. I went 30x40

Got a contract on a building. I went 30x40x10. Right st $19k delivered and assembled. I talked to the permit office and everything looks good. Waiting on the plans so I can submit my packet for approval.

I originally built 30x40x10....I currently have 6 cars, a workbench and a 4x8 table in my 30x40 space... it's bigger inside than it appears

I added 18x40 after the fact, and dropped a 40 ft shipping container on the opposite side with a rollup door into the shop..... gonna put a lift out back covered with a carport

every man needs a shop

I looked into getting a shop built. I and my uncles would pour the concrete and I’d build the shop after delivery. That was doable……until the county got involved. All money for the permits were…..$35k! Commiefornia isn’t friendly to people who want a shop.

jersey has it's faults, but my township has never given me grief about anything
