I've got this friend of mine who is adamant about cyclists being allowed on the road and how we have to share the road blah blah blah. That's all fine and dandy until you get to a mountain two lane highway where I'm going 55 and they're going 10, blind curves and all. I've almost splattered a couple. He refuses to agree that cyclists don't belong on roads like that. He even told me they belong on highways with speed limits 70+ too. The blatant lack of common sense just infuriates me.

I get that it's legal, but it's definitely not smart in many instances. Thoughts?

Sorry can't agree with you on this.. We all have to share the road.. I will say though, safety is a two way street... All parties must work on riding and driving safe.. Motorcyclist deserve the same respect as well..
I will say I lived in Chicago for 2 years, I stopped riding because the people are nice to you outside their cars, as soon as the engine starts, eff you, get out of my way!!!!

You can't agree that it's stupid to ride a bicycle on a highway where the average speed driven is multiple times higher than the bicycle speed?! Seems silly to me.

they should be licenced and registered just like car drivers

and we just won't talk about jumping the gutter crossing in the pedestrian crossing, jumping back on the road and holding everybody that just spent 10 minites try to get past the lane hogging pricks . or not stopping at stop signs , or the gaggle of multi coloured lycra wearing galah's holding everybody up ,know they are doing it and laughing about it . yeah my pet peeve there should be an "open day " on them:elmer:

Sharing the road is fine, but some of these cyclists are a pain in the ***, riding 2 abreast, 1/4-1/3 on the travel lane, or the worst is the speed racers that you can't pass because they are going to damn fast.

While we're at it, some of these joggers are pretty damn stupid also.

We have bike lanes now on some streets but cyclist's riding on the sidewalk is much more dangerous to the pedestrian. Folks just need to slow down and beware of others

as soon as the cyclists OBEY the rules of the road, the they will earn the respect they seek.
I'm really tired of having them blow thru the stop signs so they aren't inconvenienced.

You think thats bad,you should see some of them that do deliveries riding through the streets of Manhattan.

Exactly, they need to be more aware of their surrounding too...
Not just automotive drivers...
They're in far great danger than people in cars or trucks etc.

Simple logic would dictate that simple fact...

My middle sister Candy campaigned for & helped to get,
or set up bike routes in Concord Ca. all over Contra Costa Co.
when I was a kid...

I'm well aware of all the dangers too, I was an avid rider,
still do a bit, but our roads up around here
{at-least in my community, main rd.'s/especially 2 lane hwys}
are too narrow, the subdivisions off the beaten path, are ok thou &
IMO 2 lane hwys at-least here are too steep/narrow to be on a bike safely
even if your a great rider/cyclist, even if you are in a bike lane,
IMO your taking your life in your own hands...

It's either ignorance or arrogance to think otherwise,
you won't live long on a bike...

Again, true ignorance is believing you own the road... Regardless of how many wheels you have under you or if you have a motor or not!!

Saturday and Sunday mornings they ride in "packs" or "groups" of 20-30....They are not in line but a cluster filling one lane from side to side, like a mini tour de France with apparel as such. In Plano we have around 300k residents. It seems dangerous to me but I do respect them as another vehicle per se on the road. However, if one is not paying attention they could accidentally mow the group down even with the speeds of 40-45 here.

Groups and posted speed limits above 45 should not be allowed to cycle in.......I relate this to breaking distance of the average vehicle and defensive driving....easier to drive around a single cyclist vs a group....less speeds better ability to brake w/o an accident.

The law is the law thou....

Common sense is something that tends to take a back seat sometimes when a jackass wants to show off his jackassness.

I was driving on a two lane road near where I live that had no sholders. It was a curvy road full of hills and blind corners.
Comming around a curve I hit the brakes hard because in the road was a biker with a (two wheel) trailer that had two kids in it.---WTF is this??

I could not pass for a mile or two because of the road conditions on a 45mph posted road.--
Was the parent of the children in the bike trailer trying to send a message to me??:realcrazy:

Since I have hip issues, I ride a bike for exercise. I am also an avid Mopar lover and car guy, so I see both sides.

Look, there are asshole bike riders, just like there are asshole car drivers. If everyone shared the road, and showed MUTUAL respect we'd all be fine. There are car drivers who get totally pissed off because a bike in the road caused them at least 2 seconds of inconvenience. Really? If you recognize yourself, take a chill pill. On the other hand, there are entitled bike riders that puff their chests out and claim (rightfully so) that they have a right to the road. The problem is they don't get their butt OUT of the road and let cars pass when convenient. C'mon.

Here in PA, the law is that a car must pass with 4 feet between a car and a bike. Most states have something similar. By the way, the reason some larger bike groups ride in a pack is NOT to be ******** to cars, but the opposite. If they ride single file it is almost impossible to pass the entire line. On the other hand, as a pack, a car must wait for the other lane to be free. Then it is fairly easy to pass the group.

Bottom line is if we all treat each other with respect and use some common sense, we'd all be better off.

Agree 100%, in order to drive a golf cart in the neighborhood you have to register it and have a slow moving placard. Everyone else that uses the road has to pay so should they!
I think that they should be limited to roads that have 30-35 mph speed limit. No highways, freeways county roads.
They are a pain in the *** around Magnolia, there is an 8' wide shoulder and they have to ride on top of the lane marker inhibiting people doing the speed limit (60 mph) and just daring them to pass in places, they refuse to move over and back traffic up 30 deep...when I come across those types I pass carefully and let them know I'm driving a diesel...yes I can be an *** too!

Absolutely true, when the traffic is very light...However, the traffic here at 7am and forwards is fairly heavy on weekends and the bike groups typically hit the roads around 8:30...big difference between lansdale with a population of 16k versus 300k in almost the same footprint..kinda apples and oranges. I don't think anyone was implying bikers attitude in groups towards cars but it was geared toward the safety of the bikers in a group....When you have a group about a 120 feet plus long and stoplights every 300ft and impatient/careless drivers at speeds 40-45mph creates a high potential for disaster....Is there anything I can do to change it, nope...other than being a responsible driver as I currently am.....thats it....

I think sharing the road ought to include sharing the costs. If they cause an accident, how am I to be made whole ? Serious question, does homeowners insurance cover you on a bicycle ?

i've been riding competitively and for fun for the last 21 years, in the US, Japan, Korea and England. In all of those locations, their are cyclist that don't obey the rules of the road, just as their are motorist that don't obey the rules of the road, and oh by the way, the number cars that don't obey they rules out number bikes by the thousands.

I would bet cyclist that follow traffic laws are much more critical and harsh towards the idiots that dart between cars, blow though lights and stop signs etc. because they make us all look bad. On the flip side, i've been on a good wide road with a decent shoulder, and have *** clowns get as close as they can to me, dump a gear and make me disappear in diesel smoke, or someone pulling a trailer and have no clue how much wider the trailer is than their tow vehicle and they end up less than 12 inches from side swiping me, or better yet, my favorite in North Carolina i was on a quiet country two lane with a car coming towards me and a pickup behind the car. The pickup decides to pull out and pass the car, completely filling my lane , i took his mirror in my shoulder at 50 MPH and it knocked me back 6 feet into the ditch.

the next time you feel like bitching about whose a danger on the road, look yourself in the mirror, good chance it might be you!
