NEVER SEIZE ON HEADERS? YES OR NO?

A FRIEND RECENTLY VISITED IN HIS 73 ROADRUNNER. AS I WAS OBSERVING THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT I NOTICED THE SILVER ON THE HEADERS. I ASKED IS THAT HEADER PAINT? TO WHICH HE REPLIED NOPE ITS NEVER SEIZE. KEEPS THEM FROM RUSTING?
SO IS THIS A FLORIDA THING OR MAYBE AN OLD DRAGSTRIP TRICK?
 
New to me. Anti-seize is for threaded connection not an anti rust coating.

Sounds messy.
 
Anti seize or the name brand "Never Seize" is for threads and a staple when i worked in the power house. Coating it on headers sounds like a mess and it as far as i know was not designed for that.... Now for a funny story..... happened maybe late sixties. We were running coal as a fuel in the power house and anybody who knows what I'm talking about knows what a dirty nasty place the PH was back then. So in the coal yard is a system of conveyor belts and equipment. At certain locations there were these little shacks big enough for one or two guys, like a bigger closet in a house. It was a place with a phone and usually had a little electric heater to get warm in. A guy i knew decided to paint the inside and took a can of never seize, thought it was paint and got a brush and painted the entire inside of the shanty. The foreman saw it and threw a fit. Took a lot of rags to clean up the mess but laugh? Guys laughed about that and kidded the guy who did it for a very long time

That **** is probaly still lingering, whenever I use it seems to follow me around for months!
 
The Anti seize probably got poured in an unmarked can.Back then pretty common. Sounds like a three stooges episode. LOL
I fell for the shaving cream on the pie prank when I was young.
I asked this guy if he did this before or after he installed the headers and he said before. The Anti seize was definetly baked on them for sure. Weird....
 
Pretty much anything that prevents air (oxygen) from getting on the headers and doesn't burn off will keep them from rusting.....but there are MUCH better ways to do it.

You always use a thread dressing when bolting to aluminum.
But when its steel/iron I like the copper anti-sieze, has a 1800 deg rating...

I agree completely..... put PAINTING the headers with it? Sounds like old-school hillbilly engineering to me. I have met some pretty clever hillbillies in my day.
 
News to me! Uh, ask him if the stuff smoked like hell at first! Never tried anything like that so I really don't know lol
 
I definitely will. This was a first for me too. I told him wow I do not think I would have thought of using that if I was asked to think of 10 ways I could keep headers from rusting?
Even on Top Fuel cars don't they use that tape that Summit and some of the Performance houses sell?
 
I assumed you were talking about a small smear at the bolts from excess on them....are you saying the whole damn header was coated with it????
 
X 2 = both sides. I took 3 steps back when he told me... I've always treated any type of chemical that it's name ends in " COMPOUND " with much respect. My immediate thought was FLASHPOINT!
After wiping the nervous sweat from my forehead I asked very gently " did you paint the entire exhaust system with it also " ?
