Battery Voltage reading extremely high!

Thanks for all the responses.
It’s a single wire alt with an internal regulator. Just ground the case and a single wire to either the positive battery post or the battery post in the starter relay.
I will check my handheld cheap volt meter. Maybe it’s bad. I will also pull the alt and have it tested.
Thanks Jeanette
make sure the alt is grounded to the engine and that the engine is ground to the body a bad ground will over charge

You can unhook the main wire from your alternator. Start the engine and check the voltage output on the alternator post. Be sure to tape the wire up so not to ground it out with it off the alternator. This way it won’t fry anything because it’s not hooked up.

Hi all.
Just wanted to follow up with a resolution. It was indeed a bad volt meter.
After checking it against another meter I had the alt and battery checked out fine.
I assumed since the volt meter turned on it was working correctly. Definitely a first for me.
Thanks
