Im taking the head from a 170 and swapping it to a 225, Im using the rocker arm shaft from the 170 and push rods from the 225 as they are the correct length.

Question, as the rocker shaft Im installing has been set for the 170 rods/lifters will i hurt anything by just bolting it on as is or should I loosen/tighten the adjusters prior to bolting the rocker shaft on? Will it cause any issues until I can figure out how Im going to set the valves lol?

Im not a mechanic by any means so please bare with me just trying to do things on my own as help these days is slim pickings!

Thanks guys.

If you're just grabbin parts and throwing them on another motor without cleaning, inspecting, and gapping them to spec's is just asking for trouble! It may run, and it may not, and if it does it may run like crap!
Do you have a FSM? If not, get one! You need to spec everything to factory specs do it right if you want the motor to survive! Good Luck

Thanks for the tip 96 but I dont recall me stating any of that in my original post, I asked a question which I thought was rather simple for those who know or could advise on how they have done it.

Hey old dog
Loosen your adjusters put everything in place then adjust to spec. The cam and lifters you are using now will have worn differently so you need to adjust to that.

You didn't say otherwise that you weren't so how am I supposed to know what you're doing??

Slant sixes are solid lifter engines. As has been mentioned, there will likely have been different wear between the engines. Regardless though, I think it's a good practice to back off the adjusters any time you're switching or taking off/putting back on a cylinder head.

If nothing else consider the importance of getting the torque right on the head bolts and getting the head to sit square and consistent against the block deck surface. Best accomplished if you're not fighting valve springs as the head settles in place.

You can then ball park the valve settings cold (going a bit loose from the factory specs), start up the engine, get it to temp and then adjust the valves while running. Pretty easy to do on a slant 6.

Wont you have to loosen the rockers to install the pushrods? If so the question is moot.

This is good info , install head torque bolts , probably good idea to run a bottom tap in head bolt holes dirt, then loosen adjustors and cold set valves till warmed up, then reset warm ! Good luck and happy Mopar to you !

You didn't state if the 225 was a later hydraulic lifter version - these feed oil thru the valve gear down to the lifters.
If so, that setup needs to be kept whole from cam to rockers, IIRC.
If both engines are solid lifter engines, back off the adjusters, install and set the valve lash per the manual. I believe all the solid rocker gear is interchangeable between 170/198/225. Make sure all the oil feeds are oriented properly in the rocker shaft (not sure if its reversible).

The only slant 6 I have is an aluminum block 225 with a hyperpak intake - not running but a great bar ornament. Someday project.
