Has anyone installed the 440 Source extra thick steel oil pan with a windage tray and studs? I have one on order and I’m wondering if my current 1.3” long studs will be long enough? Most of mine barely have full thread engagement on the nuts now with 2 metal reinforced gaskets and a windage...
1966 car if it matters. The box is bolted in, steering column out, torsion bar out, starter out, exhaust hanging in place.
It was always tight getting a manifold off and on with a manual steering box. With the PS box in place it’s looking just near impossible. What’s the trick short of...
My 66 has a Hurst shifter with reproduction OE handle.
The shift throws in the gates with this shifter seem very long. I’m 6’2” and I have to lean forward to comfortably reach 3rd gear. I also have Ford Toploader in a car with Hurst and a repro 63 handle and a 66 Corvette with a Hurst and...
I took my 66 stock Hemi out today for the first time in a while. Fired up good and set into a fast idle and I let it idle like that for a few minutes. After it started to warm up it has this stutter in the fast idle of about 1500 rpm that vibrates everything and feels like a severe imbalance...
This came up on another forum. I’ve known about self aligning TO bearings for some time and my impression was that most of the higher quality TOBs today are self-aligning. My impression was they had become wide spread was to cope with diapraghm clutches and irregular finger alignment. However...
I’ve realized after 20 years of ownership that I’m lacking the back-side bracket on my PS pump. It’s mounted with just the front bracket piece. It has a TRW pump. I’ve found several 66-69 bracket sets for the 440 with TRW pump like the one below from Classic. Mega Parts seems to sell the...
Pulled my left valve cover again today to try to seal up the gasket again and for the first time happened to notice one of my tube seats in the head looked like it was missing an o-ring or seal at the top - compared to the other ones. After taking a picture and enlarging it I now don’t think it...
Are some or all of the motor mount bolt holes in the side of the block drilled clear through? I keep finding a drip of oil hanging on the curved bottom of the right mount plate and I cant figure out where it’s coming from. I have dye in the oil and nothing is coming down from above - valve...
My A833 is leaking some lube from somewhere around the gasket joint between the main case and tailhousing. I went through this with a Ford Toploader a few years ago and the problem was the bottom tail housing bolt hole was drilled straight through the case wall and wouldn’t seal up with just a...
Anyone with a stock Hemi street intake ever measure their end wall gasket clearance when changing gaskets or cams? Sitting loose on .062” side gaskets, my front is measuring .130” to .0135” range. Hard to measure the back but seems pretty similar. From the positioning of the gaskets on the...
Replacing the intake on my 66 Hemi I noticed at least some of the bolt holes are through-drilled into the engine valley. None of mine seemed to be wicking oil up to the top of the manifold but it got me to wondering if some non-hardening Permatex thread sealer should normally be applied to the...
Once I had the top of the engine stripped I thought I was home free but the previous owner must have RTV’d the heck out of this intake and I haven’t been able to budge it. The gasket at the front China wall was easy to separate but the side gaskets are like a rock. A sharpened putty knife and...
In another thread I’ve narrowed my largest oil leak down (I think) to the rear china wall gasket pushing and bulging out from under the manifold. It will be interesting to get it off and find out how this happened as there are 3 dowels across the area that should pin the gasket in place.
I’m...
OK - This is not a major issue as in my motor is knocking, or blowing smoke, or won’t start but it is starting to irritate me. Last spring I replaced the rear seal, the oil pan and gaskets and the valve cover gaskets on my Hemi. I think it had a side seal leak on the rear seal retainer but also...
489 with pinion spacer. After many trial setups I installed the new pinion bearing cones and races, adjusted the shim thickness for differences in bearing height from set up bearings and new bearings and put it together in semi final form. I had to make a lot more downward adjustment in pinion...
I’ve posted a couple other threads leading up to this. Been through a couple sets of noisy Richmond gears by one shop and then bought a set of US Gear - gears (made in US instead of India) and had another shop set them up. Drove a very few miles, just enough to determine they howled on steady...
I purchased a solid Spacer kit from Dr Diff for my 489 diff and it didn’t come with any instructions so I’m not sure how the shop who put it together set it up. It had a preload of 12 in-lbs with a new rear pinion bearing and used outer bearing and I would say the pinion nut was on at a pretty...
Can’t find anything on these damn on line catalogs and web site for a 50+ year old car. Anyone have the part number for the rear pinion bearing for a 489, 8-3/4 differential?
Thanks
Using a split bearing remover/puller, is it a foregone conclusion it will destroy a 489 rear pinion bearing, requiring a replacement or is there a way to get under the center race without damage to it? Is a 3” puller a proper size to use? Or is a 4-1/2” better?
thanks
Only about 15 miles on this so nobody may be able to tell much.
Kicking myself for not picking up some yellow gear paste. I had some heavy transmission assembly grease so tried applying it on a couple of teeth and wheeling it through the pinion with pressure on the ring gear. It didn’t work...
