Hey guys,

Building another motor for next season. Going to be a bracket car running in PRO. Currently I have planned is a 440 w/ Forged Crank and H Beam rods with Ross Pistons. Pistons are going to be 11.6 - 1 w/ 88cc heads. I'm running irons this year, aluminum is just out of the budget. Might be able to ahold of some 516's for real cheap to bump it up to 13.1 - 1 w/ 78cc. Future is gonna be 78cc or so aluminum head, that's my plan at least.

Looking for cam advice on what would be ideal. I've read a few articles about the .590, but it sure seems there are better cams out there instead of spinning it real high. Trying not to spin past 7000 rpm.

Looking to see what you guys are running as well! Currently have a 67 Coronet I am trying to lighten the best I can, weighed @ 3700 w/ full interior and 3/4 tank of gas with me in it.

Goal is to eventually be a consistent 10.50's car. Maybe I'm just dreaming, but that's what I'm striving for.

Thanks guys.

.590" MP isn't a modern cam, but it's not a bad cam either. At standard B-Body weight getting to 10.50's with a 440 is doable but you'll need some decent heads. I've had Eddy unported 440's w/.590 get into the 10.80-10.90 range. It takes good converter, 4.56. I'd be waiting to see how the Trick Flows play out. Plenty of used -1's for sale. That will get you there.

if your serious, which is looks like you are, consider a custom ground cam.

Bullet cams, Lunati, Hughes.

the .590 is/was a great cam. but id only run it if i had it already laying around.

View attachment 298898Best Wheels Up.jpgView attachment 298892CalTracs.jpgMotor with new lines.jpgreg 2.jpgScan0005.jpgYou are going to need at least minimum 650HP, You gotta have 350 flow heads with Max Wedge Size ports, Max Wedge Single Plane Intake, 1050 Dominator, Massive roller cam and pistons to accomodate that cam lift, Steel Billet Girdle and Steel Billet Main Caps, Roller Rockers, MSD Dist, Return Style Regulator, $300 fuel pump with correct plumbing, 2" headers, etc, etc, etc. 5000+ Converter, Complete Cal Trac Setup and good slicks to go 10.50. You gotta go 1.40 or so 60 foot to get to 10.50. And if you have 650HP you are going to need a DANA 60 or you will break the 8 3/4 (fact).
10.50 is TOUGH....and a 650HP motor and everything you need with it aint cheap...and I am sure most will agree with me on that. You have 3800lbs to carry down the track.
You better be ready to spend around $12000 to $15000 for everything needed. Just my opinion.
I am in the middle of just trying to get to 10.60 or 10.70 and I have gone 10.98 so far and I need some more tuning (jetting, timing, etc) to make that 10.98 to a 10.85 but I am gonna have to spend another couple thousand to get to 10.60 (maybe). Just bought a new Edelbrock Victor Single Plane Intake and a brand new Dominator (about $1200 right there) to maybe get me from 10.85 to 10.70 or 10.65.
My car is a 66 Coronet with fiberglass front fenders, hood and bumpers, fuel cell, no back seat, etc, etc, and it weighs 3670 with me in it and 5 gal of gas..and that is on a certified scale.
My new motor makes 602HP (on the engine Dyno) and it is a 505", .620 Comp Solid Lifter Cam with 1.6 roller rockers, 12.2-1 pistons, girdle and steel billet main caps. 1 7/8 Hooker Super Comp Headers, Indy SEZ (non-max wedge ports) heads with INDY Dual Plane Intake and 850 Mighty Demon. (just sold the Intake and 850 and am replacing that with my new Victor Single Plane Intake and new 1050 Dominator all in the effort to get to 10.70 (and if I am really lucky to get to 10.60) I have the complete cal trac setup, DANA 60, 5000 Converter by Lenny at Ultimate Converter, etc, etc, etc until I am just tired of spending money....lol.
Again, take my word for it .... 10.50 is tough

Mike you make a very convincing argument, I do have a 8 3/4 right now and I know its not going to enjoy that transbrake. Thank you for all the info guys. Thinking a custom cam would be the way to go. Appreciate all the input.

Here is a build up of a 440 from 404 HP to 658 HP. We started with different variations of ported iron heads to fully ported Indy EZ heads.

.545" lift hydraulic flat tappet, hydraulic flat tappet with solid lifters, and solid roller.

It will give you some idea how the .590 may perform with your set up.

Same engine, reported on FBBO.

I ran the MP 590 cam in my 360 stock stroke with ported factory heads, 11.5:1 compression a Victor intake and 850 demon, 5000 stall 8" converter and a 904 trans. All in a 65 Valiant. Car ran 10.20's at 130.. all motor, no nitrous or boost, very reliable and consistent combination. Some say the MP grinds are outdated... may be true... but in my experience they still work just fine.

I run the 590 in my street car and i love it very much i have the heads for it i just need some more Compression and i myself am very Serious about using it in my stroker motor that i am building for my street car..

Yes there are better cams out there depending on what you are doing i am just a .. ( Old Mopar Head and love the Purple Shaft grinds.. )
But Bullet Cams is a awesome place to get one Comp is a great place to get one lots of good choices.

I see no problem with the 590 going into the 10's . I believe you will need more cubes or 300 plus pound weightloss to go mid 10's.
My 440 has gone high 10.80's at 3660lbs , this is with .520 nett lift cam , but it can be a little erratic . That is with a HP1000 based Prosystems 4150 carb , eddy victor intake , under 11:1 comp . I have progressed this since 2007 , but now am building a 505 to go 10.50's . Easier way to get there . All with 4.10 gears and 28" radial tyre
I am looking at a Howards solid flat tappet cam with mid 600 lift
Good luck

Tex

pretty sure the .590 is mopars re-pop of a racer brown stx23. the heads will be the limiting factor.

(and bigger headers)...at least 30 hp on the table right there!

Mentor70...I agree, I just left out "bigger headers" ... we all need at least 2" headers with 3.5" collectors OR TTI 2 1/8 inch step headers....heck, its only money

I see you are class racing but if its just the number you want put a plate kit on it.

i've seen guys go pretty fast with a .590, it'll need a loose converter though with that combo. i think you would have to cut/lighten your car up to run consistent mid 10's with a 440 (even if it had good heads). i'd put the closed chambers on it given your current options.

What would you consider a loose converter for a 3700 lb B-Body w/ 4.11's?

I dont disagree with you Mike but I dont use alot of that list.
My heads dont flow 350 (329 @ .600)
My compression is 10.6
I dont run a single plane or Dominator (Indy dual plane and 850 DP)
I dont run a girdle I just have steel caps and main studs
I do have roller rockers but no MSD
I dont have a return regulator
Dont use 5000 stall (Dynamic 4200 flash 9.5 converter)
Dont have Cal Tracs (just SS springs)
I do use 2" headers but run a full lenth 3" exh
And I dont have a $300 dollar fuel pump (The black Holley Pump $149. I believe)
But I do run a 4.15 crank for 493 cubes.
I dont run a roller cam as I use a solid flat tappet.
My cam is close to the .590 as its .585 & .592 with 264 & 270 @ .050 on a 110LSA in at 106 ICL.

My 60 is not in the 1.40's but my best is a 1.50 at 10.76 and 124.79 mph

Not trying to be smart as I would never do that and I respect the opinion of a guy like you who has raced since the 60's. I am just saying on some combo's we get lucky with them and they click pretty good as I cant afford most of the high dollar parts and I have to compromise and use what I can. Even my 850 Carb was lent to me by a friend who I am just going to pay him for it but he just told me to use it as I only had a 750 myself. But the list you stated should get any combo well into the tens. Ron

383man there are good combos and then there are bad combos and then there are just combos and then there arent lol...you got a GREAT combo!!
