A little progress, broke out the old trusty mixer (my grandfather bought) and took care of another project. I didn't like the steps going into the garage so I put the block wall up earlier this year but never had the funds to pour the apron, with winter coming I couldn't leave the blocks exposed or I'd be redoing those too. 2 truck loads of gravel a huge truck load of sand and lots of Portland cement and it's done. I sure hope funds are there to finish the addition next summer.

Oh yeah and the curse of the shovel lives on, first pour required a make shift roof because it rained the whole time I was pouring... I was drenched!

Amazingly it didn't rain a drop this weekend so that was a huge relief, rain the rest of the week though

That's the truth, there's not a weekend that goes by that I don't find something to work on.

Milestone met!!!! I now have heat and not just temporary.


Here's the heat source for those who didn't see it in an earlier post. It's a Central Boiler 750 Edge HD.

Here's where it enters the garage in one of my workbench cabinets where it's easily hidden behind the closed doors. A 2x4 was grooved for 2 1" lines for routing keeping the lines secure and off of the block wall.

The Taco Pump is slick, it uses sensors to monitor supply and return temps maintaining a 20 degree differential so the boiler never gets shocked with cool water by altering the gpm. In this picture I just got it going so the temps are low, it operates at 180 degrees.

For delivery I bought a 100,000 BTU propane furnace off Craigslist and a 140,000 BTU exchanger (interchangeable with the home). Given the tight space I had to work with I formed my own plenum that hopefully someday will get a horizontal A coil added for air.
The furnace will eventually get hooked up to propane for backup but for now it's wired so only the fan runs when calling for heat. I had concerns about heat distribution, not anymore... a 100,000 BTU furnace can push enough air that you can feel it hitting the opposite wall pushing to the floor!

And finally any temp you desire at your finger tip.

Devon...maybe I missed it but what product did you use on your floor for stain?
My basement slab is discolored everywhere I had the block sitting...I might have to put something on it...
Not really looking for a smooth sheen as much as just making everything look more random...

If you have any questions about application just ask, it's pretty simple. For the random look I had a bunch of small sample colors that they had given me, I just did the whole floor one solid color then randomly dumped the other sample colors (undiluted) into the wet base color so it naturally flowed together. I like it really well, others may not.

I'm probably just going to use a base color...maybe something in a light gray...It just has to be something I can clean up if and when crap gets spilled on it...
Now upstairs on the other hand where the 21' side is I want to do something nice...I just haven't figured out what that is...
I had checked into doing the garage racedeck flooring...That was ruled out 3 steps onto a sample floor...I liked the idea of a porcelain tile...I really wanted to do a polished concrete but at $6.00-$10.00 a sq ft at 567 sq ft that's not looking to good...
I checked on renting a concrete polishing tool yesterday...watched a couple youtube video's...but with the mess its almost something I would need to do before any other finishes...

Acid stain and sealer can make an amazing looking floor, all you have to do is protect the base of the wall from over spray (applied with a garden sprayer) and be prepared to mop and mop and mop... to get the acid residue up before sealing. I chose it mostly because I'll be doing hot work where other options would literally leave burn Mark's, it cleans easily and most important I really like a natural look. Staining concrete leaves a lot of variations because of the concrete itself giving it a little bit of a stone/slate look which was right up my alley.

Basically this thing burns upside down, it burns the wood in the firebox then the unburned fumes go down into the ash pan/reaction chamber where they are burned then pass through the rear heat exchanger. Pretty cool.

Next week I'll be grinning ear to ear, finally ordered all the drawer slides and drawer pulls to make all 32 drawers useable. 100 lbs full extension ball bearing slides. This will be a HUGE game changer because I've go crap everywhere and nowhere to put it! I chose these both for the rustic look I'm sticking with and because they should take something falling on them without breaking.
