I'm running a Competition Components hydraulic roller and have been using 5W30 in the cooler months, I have also run Mobil 1 European blend 0W40 when the weather gets hotter with no issues. Late last fall I purchased a case of new Mobil 1 0W40 Oil made specifically for Super cars and plan on putting that in next month. I'm running Morel lifters and they do not recommend anything heavier than 10W40.So, its time to change oil in the 505 engine..... roller rockers and roller cam.... Zinc not a requirement I have read..... so like a Mobil 1 synthetic? Interested in what you guys are using in your roller engines ......... Muscle Motors in Michigan who built this engine back in 2012 seems to be no longer in business.... and the guy I bought it from and stored it for all these years can't remember what he used..... he thinks a straight weight 30w or 40w..... which I think is to thick for cold starts....... appreciate your input.... Not any more. The last 3 winters here in midMichigan have been Wimpy. I can't recall a below 0* reading on my thermometer. Sad.
They have zero concerns about burning up pushrod cups?I thought a big bonus of going roller was you can use any oil?
I do know that my engine guy (and other pro builders ) do NOT recommend the higher zinc/phosphorus-type oils with roller cams, regardless of your spring forces.
I guess not....maybe they know enough to set things up to oil correctly...They have zero concerns about burning up pushrod cups?
How about all us flat tappet guys that use high zinc oil, do we have pitted bearings and not know it? My stuff stays park for 6 months every winter. I don't start it once a month and let it itdle for 30 minutes to "warm up" and get moisture in the exhaust and crankcase.I thought that I read that excessive zinc can cause pitting on the bearings if the engine sits for awhile.
True?
You'd think a properly oiled flat tappet wouldn't need zinc too then.I guess not....maybe they know enough to set things up to oil correctly...
