Cars that would have been cool, EXCEPT...

We can find small "nits" on almost any car, but there are lots that are really well done. It's hard to argue with the design of a 68 Charger or a 63 split window Corvette. Likewise, there are cars that are just plain ugly. Remember the AMC Pacer and the Pontiac Aztek?

But then there are some cars that might have been a really cool car except for one or two major issues.

For example, many seem to agree that the Chrysler Crossfire would have been cool except for the rear end treatment.

Likewise, the DeLorean could have been cool except for its pathetic engine/power.

What cars, in your opinion, do you think would have been really cool except...???

Post 'em up!

When the 1970s B bodies came out with 60 series tires, I was bummed that Chrysler didn't offer a factory 15" Magnum 500 wheel. I will never forget watching Bill Clark pulling into the high school parking lot with his brand new 1970 Dealer Demonstrator GTX (which was a fraternal twin to the '69 I own,) and being horrified at seeing it equipped with Rallye wheels. Look how many B bodies you see with 15" Magnums today, even though they are not factory "correct."

Probably the best, coolest styled car of the late 70's malaise era. Obviously, the major issue, as all cars then, is underpowered. Nevertheless, my personal opinion is this is the coolest car of the late 70's-early 80's., which would really be cool with a stroked 400 :)

2000's Magnum wagons IMO would have been a LOT cooler if they had used the one year only, SRT only, last year of production only front fascia on all of them.

The Bricklin SV-1 was pretty cool for 1974 and 75, but it had the build quality of a toaster oven!

In the end, warped body panels, electrical problems, and shoddy build quality were inherent to most of the vehicles in the production line. Worst, the Bricklin SV-1 ended up costing $9,980 when all was said and done, which was about $3,300 more than what Chevy was asking for its C3 Corvette.

Porsche Panamera. Two too many doors. Come on Porsche! Why are you building 4 door cars? Not your gig!

some late 70s car could have been cool, but it's hard to be cool while sporting an 85 mph speedometer

Plymouth Prowler. Looked ok then drove one, had all the performance of a K car.

Shopping for a minivan when the kids were little had us entertaining all sorts of options. We finally settled on a Caravan Sport.

But my candidate here for this thread is...

The early 90's Pontiac Transport with that bubble glass appearance

Reminded me too much of this

had a nice 78 Bronco with a 460..... I swapped in the 100 MPH speedo from the earlier pickups......had to do it

Hawk, my wife might take exception to your Crossfire comment.

I am not a Crossfire hater at all. However, I do think that most people feel the rear end treatment of the car could have been better designed, and I tend to agree. I actually think the convertible looks quite decent.

The Porsche 928 is another example where the rounded rear missed the mark just a bit, IMHO

The Crossfire is too darn small inside.
Another cool car with a weird back end treatment is the Jensen Interceptor.

The 240Z had a nice hatch back design. The Jensen curved rear glass just looks strange like a AMC Pacer

Stupid front bumpers on these...trashed the look of the front end like those horrible bumpers placed on later E Bodies.

Certainly many examples/opinions on what’s fugly. Just MO, but a bunch of cars after early 70’s got uglier, some to do with the big bumpers and boxier body lines. The ’70 RR was supreme to me; too bad it was only one year. A ’70 Challenger compared with a ’73? No knock on the ’73, they’re cool, had one after a ’70 Cuda. Just that I liked the 70’s as my 1st choice. A ’69 Nova or GTO vs a ’74? ’70 Torino or ’75? A ‘60 Chrysler vs a ’61? Many examples to be had which some others will quickly disagree. Have a '63 Fury I restored and like it a bunch. Got it in '95 from CA. My 1st preference for this era ride? A '64 or '64 Polara. All in the eyes of the beholder...
