Finally time to pull the trigger . . . starting on the New (much anticipated) SHOP - Build

And finally . . . the day has arrived . . . Insulation is going into the shop today . . .

Finally - after all the hoops, red tape, and delays . . . it's finally time to get insulation . . .

This is not typical for me . . . watching the work get done and not doing it myself . . .

More Later . . .
I'm having my attic blown in by a friend's company. I'm not walking those beams in the dark carrying that huge hose. It's not pitch black, but low enough light to add to the danger.

What is the silver stuff inside on the walls between the studs ? how thick is it ? what's it called ?
Hey there . . .

The silver stuff in the bays is called Radiant Barrier - it was purchased for Lowe's. It consists of (2) layers of Mylar with a thin
bubble wrap between them - it really does a great job of reducing the amount of heat that can pass through it - have it completely
covering the bottom of all the studs in my attic and the attic will hardly get above 100 degrees ( yes - I've got exhaust fans too )
even on the hottest days down here in North Carolina. My HVAC guy was vising and we went up in the attic - to demo the stuff -
and he was AMAZED at how well it actually worked . . .

Thought the insulation would be done this year - not quite - Final insulation to be installed 1/2/2026 . . .

Spray foam installation of that last part of my shop is now scheduled for January 2nd
( based on no rain - cannot roll my Belvedere out in the rain . . . )

The installation of the spray foam has started and 3/4 of the shop is now done . . .

The East bay of the shop is now completed . . .

sm_shop1711.jpg

This is the west bay - it was not done because it was full of "stuff" and they had no way to access the ceiling and
walls - so my job now is to get this area cleared out so they can have access . . .

sm_shop1712.jpg

My pallet jack seals were leaking - so the pump was rebuilt and new seals were installed - so far it all
Appears to be working better now

sm_shop1713.jpg

Added (3) spot lights on the side of the shop to light my backyard - ( only 2 are shown in this picture )
These light are doing a fantastic job and light up the backyard very nicely . . .

sm_shop1714.jpg

Time to start working on installing the ship lap in the silo - not too sure how this is going to go . . .

sm_shop1715.jpg

progress on the installation of the ship lap . . . getting the hang of this . . . slowly . . . gonna take a while . . .

sm_shop1716.jpg

Starting to wrap onto the next wall . . . this is really going to be interesting . . .

sm_shop1717.jpg

Had a couple weeks in Florida to help out my daughter when she had surgery to allow her to get some rest and
assist her with the kids - OH DARN - had to spend 2 weeks in Florida spending time with granddaughters.

My only concern, is that my walls were supposed to be foamed to 6" . . . but I'm seeing many places in the shop
that are only done to 4" . . . and a few are only 3" . . . so I'm hoping that they will be "corrected". Pretty sure it
was a communication concern - and I'm sure that they will get this corrected.

Excited and anxious to get to the rest of this build - and the next big project - sheetrock.

More Later . . .

Keep at ‘em Larry, I still remember meeting up with you at the National’s years(?) ago in Columbus. Jeff

I hope you save some energy to work on the Belvedere when the shop is completed Larry.

Happy New Year to you.... loving the progress. :)

Don’t know what temperatures you are worried about, heat or cold. Our houses were built with 2x4 studs, R23 insulation. This was a mandatory requirement.
I don’t think your temperatures get down to -30f very often. If it was myself I wouldn’t worry about those areas of less insulation. Maybe you have a contract.
Our garage, very small compared to yours has 2x6 insulated walls and over R40 in the ceiling.
I do envy yours, Congratulations

Been trying to find some time to get this update posted and inform on the progress . . .

LOTS has been going on and getting one here recently ( and my wallets can feel it )

The Insulation that was supposed to be done January 2nd, got pushed out to January 9th.
Not a big deal - but it's another week delay in the progress . . .

The insulation in the building is COMPLETE - they also went back to some of the less than desirable
areas and got them touched up to better fill the space. My biggest concern was the front wall
that will be getting ALL of the day SUN in the Summer months . . .

Picked up a couple sheets of drywall from the store to get started on the drywall installation .

The ceilings are such a pain . . . made it to the corner . . . almost every piece has a cutout in it ( ARGH )

sm_shop1718.jpg

Moved over to the center section and got started on this section back by the silo . . .

sm_shop1719.jpg

The ceiling in this section are done ( except for the stupid 2" piece at the top that needs to be installed )

sm_shop1720.jpg

Working my way back up the center wall section . . . and making good progress on this bay . . .

sm_shop1721.jpg

Guess that this picture was in there twice - guess this was imagined to be a better shot . . .
See the opening - by the silo - that will be left open - to allow daylight to show through and see through too

sm_shop1722.jpg

This was a HUGE help ( but I paid for it ) - got 18 sheets of 12 foot drywall dropped upstairs ! ! !

sm_shop1723.jpg

And the rest of the load is stored downstairs to get the lower part completed . . . that's LOT of drywall . . .

sm_shop1724.jpg

Left bay is moving along now that I've got the 12' section delivered and available to install . . . YAY ! ! !

sm_shop1725.jpg

Got some shelving in the way but this bay is getting to the point of being almost DONE now . . .

sm_shop1726.jpg

And the opening - into the silo that was mentioned . . . it's getting finalized inside the silo to make it complete . . .

sm_shop1727.jpg

Think that I've got 120 - 130 sheets of sheetrock that will need to get installed to get this completed. Getting the
sheetrock UP is the next hurdle to getting my final inspection on my electrical - and with that, POWER will be able
to be hooked up to my building . . . FINALLY . . .

That's the next step that I'm shooting for . . .

More Later . . .

Love this thread - gotta admire a guy that has literally done the whole project himself.

Hey Olwhite63 . . .

This has been one of my biggest BUCKET LIST items - to build my own shop ( remember building one for my grandpa years ago )
And wanted to build one for myself ( this one is a "bit" bigger too ). The challenges that I've encountered and had to solve over
the past 5 years has been amazing - just keep plugging along until the next challenge shows itself . . . then figure IT out too.

This has been an amazing journey - and I would not change my decision nor all the work that has gone into this project for anything.
And seeing this project getting completed just helps me keep pushing on to get to the end and FINALLY have my own shop

My only regret - is NOT starting this thing 10 years ago . . .

Thanks for the kind words . . . so much appreciated . . .

Alright Now . . . WHO sent this "white" stuff down to me in NC ? ! ? ! ? Crazy ! ! !

Can't believe it - we got 14-16" of snow the past weekend down here in NC . . . UGH !
I think that the state was "officially" - SHUT DOWN . . . LOL

Of course - I'm working on the sheetrock installation and this is the view of my house . . .

sm_shop1728.jpg

And a picture of the shop a couple of days later - thought a pic with SNOW would be cool because it may never
happen ( this deep ) down here in NC again . . .

sm_shop1729.jpg

Got the top wall of the silo completed, and you can see from the image, only 1 wall left to do to have the entire
thing completed ( note: got a few planks needed at the top of all walls too ) - getting close . . .

sm_shop1730.jpg

Jumped upstairs, for a change of pace, and got started on the wall up there - short walls . . . LOL . . . so they can
get done pretty quickly . . .

sm_shop1731.jpg

Since the West bay was almost all done - jumped over to the East bay and got started on the exterior wall over
there to make some progress on wall that can be reached without having to move a ton of things to do them . . .

sm_shop1732.jpg

That's when I asked the electrical inspector on his "phrasing" of the requirements for an inspection . . . he said
get the sheetrock done and the inspection can take place - talked to him and he elaborated the laws - 8' up from
the finish floor - the wall must be covering ALL electrical wires ( so workers can't hang TOOLS on the exposed
wires in the walls ) - that makes sense . . .

So NOW - I have a FOCUS - get all the wires in the walls covered with sheetrock to get the inspection and get
power in the building ! ( spray foam counts as "covered" - can't see the wires . . . YAY ! )

Shifted to the other wall - it has exposed wires - it's now fully covered . . .

sm_shop1733.jpg

Had to do a bunch of moving things around for this wall in the center section - but all of the exposed wires in the
walls for this wall are now COVERED . . . only 1 wall left to do . . .

sm_shop1734.jpg

And it is now, after my work today - past the 3/4 completed stage - the back section will require a bunch of stuff
to get relocated so I can get back there and get the last 2 panels up and installed . . .

sm_shop1735.jpg

Great progress, and the elaboration by the inspector sure helped me to get my ducks in a row so that the work
can get done efficiently, to allow the electrical inspection, and allow power to get hooked up in the building.

Should be able to get the last of this wall done tomorrow, and one small piece upstairs . . .

After that - will need to get some lights installed - required for the inspection . . . and HOPEFULLY - I'm almost
to the point for that to happen !

More Later . . .
