Hey guys, I will be spending a week in the LA-Carmel-Fresno areas of California in three weeks.
Looking for suggestions of must dos while in the area.
I would love to hit a cruise night Cali style.
Speed shops? Museums?

Cheers
Jeff

This is the real reason the car is not getting finished. lol

1. Hogsbreath dining/cocktails in Carmel by the sea (owned by Clint Eastwood)
2. Visit Santa Monica and Venice Beach

Will you have a vehicle while you are there? I've visited California around 7 times just to road trip. We rent a convertible which is actually pretty affordable there. Our favorite trip is the beautiful #1 pacific coast highway. We started one time from Seattle Washington and drove the #1 south to San Diego. But since you are in LA, get out of the traffic mess and make the #1 hwy drive north to San Francisco, stopping in Malibu for a walk on the beach, take a hike in Big Sur and enjoy the eye candy views all along the way. Returning back to LA you could retrace the #1 hwy and you will see a whole new picture experience.

South of LA on the #1 is also nice but not a scenic as north. If you make the trip to San Diego, sit on the beach in front of Coronado Hotel and watch the sunset. Stunning.

Other than that, LA itself is a traffic nightmare with lots of touristy places. Check out the many 'Hop on Hop off Double Decker Bus tours. You will see and hear about lots of landmarks and be able to hop off the bus and get back on later.

If you are in the gambling/entertainment mood, Las Vegas is less than 4 hours away from LA.

Santa Monica, the beach and pier there are great. Not sure which way Carmel & Fresno are from LA but Huntington Beach is where Foose & some other hot rod shops are. Have a great time.

Fresno is not so bad, but I wouldn't make it a stop on my vacation.

Thanks Gents,
We are actually driving the west cost highway from Seattle to San Fran then spending a week tooling around. I have a niece to visit in San Fran then we are open. The company I work for has an office in Fresno, that is the only reason that I will be going there (drop off my resume) lol.
Thinking about renting an RV when we get to California, two of my kids are flying down to meet up with my wife and I. I would like a bit of extra space and some where that they can sleep all day while we travel around. Teenagers!!!
Is there a web site that lists cruise nights in different areas?
Cheers

SoCal;
AAA Autoclub Bakersfield/Famoso Raceway {brackets or drag races}
AAA Autoclub Fontana Raceway {drags or Roundy rounders, Legends cars etc.}
Santa Barbra, Malibu, Huntington Beach, Ocean Beach, Pacific Palisades
Pebble Beach, Moro Bay area/Bayonette if your into golf,
or Monterey area & 17 mile drive in really nice too
Laguna Secca/Mazda Raceway
Pacific Coast Hwy, especially in LA area

Monterey Bay Aquarium

Pretty much any of the 100's of Cali beaches, except maybe the nude beaches...
Hwy 1 Coastal Hwy is pretty cool & scenic too, especially great if you bring a lady...
{I say don't bring sand to the beach thou...LOL, if you get my drift ?}

Maybe take a surfing lesson or go on a Hobbiecat or Wave Runner

Bobs Big Boys in LA/Burbank {?} area
{I cant remember where, I'm tired & my sometimmers acting up...LOL}
Pinky's Hot Dogs Hollywood area

for cruise/show nights etc. check the -www- google search

But, I'm much more of a NorCal guy thou,
someone from SoCal could speak to the cruise scene far better...
Van nuys Blvd & Colorado Blvd were a historic cruises,
parts of old route 66, Mulholland Dr. {windy curvy rd. famous/infamous street/rd.}
some are still kind of cool too

Have fun & enjoy SoCal & CenCal,
Make sure you bring & wear good sun block & sun glasses,
bring lots of shorts, cool shirts & sandals maybe,
it ain't the great white north, it will be warm/probably hot no doubt 90*f-100*f+...

NorCal;
Redbluff & Redding area have some cruises & a Dragstrip too
Lake Tahoe Hwy 80/50, awesome area beautiful country {touristy thou}
Any of the Motherload off Hwy 49 & Placerville, Grass Valley,
Georgetown Hwy 193 & east-Calif area off Hwy 50 or Int. Hwy 80 area too...
Some cool areas Gold Country too, Coloma gold discovery site,
right on the American river, even great white water rafting if you want...
&/or maybe Sutter's Fort & the Capitol in Sacramento...

The larger cities are scum for the most part,
{I was born & raised here, I love my state BUT, I know where not to go too}
unless it's in the touristy areas, it's pretty tame...
I'd suggest stay to the country off the beaten' path if you can...

Not trying to scare you or deter you from coming to Cali, it can be great !!
just be aware of your surrounding, especially in the inner-shity's...

Alameda, Benicia & Vallejo {even Port Chicago, by Concord/Pittsburg}
are old historic military areas...

There area some great places in the NorCal Sacramento River Delta too,
hwy 4 & hwy 160 or even parts of hwy 12

S.F. not my favorite place at all, Alcatraz Isl., Presidio, Treasure Island too
but lots of cool stuff to visit, especially on the waterfront & Piers, SF Bay Aquarium,
Giants Game PacBell Park, A's game Oakland Coliseum Oakland & SF Zoo's
{Touristy Pier 39 & Embarcadero areas}...

Santa Cruz Beach Board walk, various old rides & souvenirs,
live music occasionally, surf, sand, critters to watch...LOL
IIRC they have a few cruises here & there too,
no idea of dates or if organized either, haven't been in a while,
especially anything along/on the water/beach front...

Yosemite Nat. Park, is beautiful right now, it's probably crowded thou...

Watsonville, Calistoga, Antioch, Sacramento, Stockton
all have decent either dirt &/or paved roundy rounder tracks
Sears Point/Infinion Sonoma & Sacramento Raceway of Hwy 16,
both Drags weekdays IIRC Wed. evenings & some weekends too...

RV would be a great idea,
RV Parks/spaces are hard to come-by in the summer,
some campgrounds have size limits too
we have some great Forestry, 100's of Lakes {albeit low}, multitudes of great fishing
Rivers, Recreation areas, National Parks & great Campgrounds here

OK that's enough...LOL
I could probably go on & on...

Good Luck & happy Moparing

You could always come visit me, I'm south of Fresno by 40 minutes in Hanford.

Same here. I'm 30 miles from Santa Cruz. Trip duration? I'll pm you. I remember my first trip to California. 1988. Moved here to the left coast (and it is waaaaaaaaaay left) in 1991.

Lots to do in SoCal as well. Everyone wants to go to Hollywood - but frankly there's not that much to see unless you did one of the tour bus trips.

Venice beach is a must - just go during the day. At night other things happen there. But it's plenty safe there during the day. Weekends are best.

You might like some of the stuff like going on set for a tv show - they're free. Just be prepared it takes a lot of the day to get in and out. You can get tickets either on line or at Venice Beach. Then there's Universal Studios and of course Disneyland.

All the the beach cities are nice. I would recommend Manhattan and Hermosa beaches. In Orange County there's Huntington Beach and Laguna Beach where I live. Beautiful places. Lots of restaurants and of course beautiful beaches.

There's no reason to go to downtown Los Angeles. There's nothing special there but a big congested city. Not like San Francisco which I think is a great city with lots to see and do there.

I think you might be here while the car show at Route 66 in downtown San Bernadino. You can go online and find the dates for that. If you want to see Mopars that's not your show. Mostly Fords and chebbies. And kind of out of the way of a lot of other things you'll want to do.

Plenty to do in SoCal and the weather will never disappoint you. It's always nice here. We wish we would get some rainy weather but it simply doesn't rain. Always mid 70s to mid 80s and sunny.

Hope you and the family have a wonderful trip. If you want any more detail or help on the SoCal part of the journey just send me a pm. I'd be happy to help make your trip more enjoyable.

Be aware that the bigger the RV, the harder and slower it is to drive the #1 hwy. There are lots of tight turns and inclines. Be aware in Oregon you cannot pump your own gas, its the law. You will love the Pacific Coast Highway!
