Charging a deep cycle battery on 2amps auto but the gauge on the charger says it's charging 14 amps. Voltmeter says the battery is at 12.8

Be careful!

does it drop down after a few min.s ?

that doesn't sound right for a 2 amp charge setting
check it with a different volt/amp meter

is it some auto charge setting or something else too ?

I went out & put my "old" 2/12/50 amp Schumacher smart charger
I checked dc voltage & amperage on each with a Fluke meter
voltage was 13+ when battery is fully charged, while the charger is connected
amperage setting was all within 2ish-5-ish amps,
sort of a spiked a couple amps at 1st off of each setting,
then went down to what it was supposed to be, give or take 1-2 amps
except the 50 amp setting it only works when cranking 'it boosts' up to 50 amps
when the battery is really drained (it's new battery) otherwise, it's like 12-15 amps charge too...
gauge on the charger is all over the map, I trust my Fluke Meter way more...

Sounds like it's fubar to me. Probably some diodes or a rectumfier or the like.

Yeah, thinking the charger is hosed......turned it off and a minute later it showed the battery is charged but the volt meter I have on the bettery shows 12v even.
