Most comfortable classic to travel cross country.

Like a Timex watch; it just keeps on ticking.
My mistake, I met him in Bloomington Illinois at the 30th birthday of the Charger in 1996. That was were we got the hard luck award for hitting a deer in the dells on the way to the meet. He was also at the 50th in Detroit, but didn‘t get to talk to him.

Is that something like riding a hard tail Harley? He he.
Actually this car has the standard springs, not the HD springs, it has the mid sized torsion bars & Bilstein shocks... It rides pretty well for an E body... I might change the tires before the drive though I'd prefer to wait till I get home...

Have a very good time.

I'll be hitting the road in a few days for an 1800 mile adventure in an E body... Y'all who don't want to put in miles in an E body are a buncha pussies....
Make sure to start a thread and post lots of pics please!

I was at the 50th at Auburn Hills with Richard as well, with my 1964 Polara 500 convertible. The 727 in his Charger started acting up that day. By the time we got home, only high gear was still working. We pulled the transmission, and it looked like the torque converter failed, putting metal shrapnel into the fluid, which in turn ate up all the soft bushings, thrust washers, etc. It was a really hot day and my convertible was acting up as well. It kept stalling at traffic lights in Detroit, and I thought it was vapor locking. It turned out that my coil was failing. It was a very interesting 125 mile trip home for the both of us.

Well, Tuesday I had the car inspected in order to get Texas license & registration... It passed, Wednesday I got the title & registration... So I was able to drive the car legally.. First time the car has been on the road in about 15 years... It ran pretty well, ambient temps were around 100 degrees & the car ran slightly past half scale.. I drove it for about three hours testing it to see if it was ready for a road trip...

I've already replaced the fuel tank, blown out the lines, replaced the pump & filter... Rebuilt the carb... Rebuilt the calipers & wheel cylinders, replaced all the hoses & installed three master cylinders, all were bad... I finally took the first one apart & was able to repair it.. The residual pressure valve was installed backwards... Replaced the water pump, throughly flushed the cooling system

Anyway the old tires were practically new with least than 500 miles on them... But were 15 years old & the car hadn't moved so they were horribly flat spotted... Reading on the internet some folks said they would go back to being round after getting them hot & running them for 1/2 hour... Not the case..

So I decided rather than the T/A's or Coopers the local tire shop sells I wanted to try the Mickey Thompson ST radials... Summit showed them in stock... I called to confirm & to make sure they could mount them if I drove the car up there...

"Yeah, no problem, come on up" A three hour drive each way... I figured the six hours of driving would be a good solid pre-commitment test drive...

On the way up the car ran great, temps were fairly cool & the gauge never got close to half scale... I get to Summit & guess what? We can mount them but it's not gonna happen till after 6PM cause the only guy who installs tires comes in later... Just leave your wheels & pick them up tomorrow...........

Oh.. They are on your car??? We can't take wheels off your car!!!.......................... ARE YOU FU*KING KIDDING ME!!!

Needless to say things didn't get any better from there.... No way I was gonna drive all the way back to Austin on those other than round tires.. So, I found a Discount Tire nearby & told them my story, they tried to find me the tires I wanted through their vendors & warehouse sources.... No luck.. But if I go over to Summit & buy the tires them will install them....

I wasn't thrilled to be doing business with Summit after the earlier ordeal but I have limited time & a mission to accomplish...

So tires are mounted &I'm ready to hit the road.... I didn't even get out of the parking lot & the temp gauge was buried... WTH??? Anyway I spent a couple hours trying to cool it down & had no luck, every time I started the car within a few minutes the gauge was buried & yes the engine was really that hot...

Would up calling AAA first time in years... Towed me home 200 miles... I just had to wait five hours for a driver to be available....

I'm calling the adventure off... I'm catching a flight home & I'll have a transport deliver the car... Not how I wanted to do it but I can't afford to have it do this again in the middle of no where...

Trust me, I feel your pain when you are away from home and have car issues - you might be in the middle of nowhere trying to solve an issue and get parts for these old cars. Luckily, it has worked out OK so far for me, and FBBO has always been there to help too!

With your car having sat for 15 years there are bound to be a few issues. A sticking thermostat (???) certainly is not unexpected after sitting that long. Hope you work through it. Get a few more miles on the car and you should be in good shape. My issues happened in the first 1000 miles or so. You might be getting close now, so stick it out and get that puppy on the road!!!

I've already changed the thermostat, twice... Trust me, I want to do the drive but I've already been working on the car for over two weeks.. No tools, no lift, having a heck of a time getting parts... And I have responsibilities at home that are getting ignored... I'll get it home where I have everything I need & get it properly sortedThen take a few days and have an enjoyable drive...

Wow! Persistence! Shame you couldn't make the drive home with it. That sucks. Guess it's full of coolant? Probably the radiator is plugged up. What's the car you picked up and are trying to drive home? I missed that somewhere?

It's a Challenger that was literally my daily driver from 1990 to 1995, I sold it to pay for the restoration of my Challenger R/T convertible.. Didn't want to sell it but wasn't getting any interest from potential buyers of my U code R/T SE & half a dozen guys had told me they weren't interested in the hard top but if I decided to sell the vert let them know... So eventually I let it go, but the first person in line was my brother who'd always told me if I was gonna sell it let him know... That was 1995.. So 27 years later I'm getting it back...

OMG I'm jealous! I love that car. I've got a U code 70 I'm eager to get started on. It's just a hardtop, but had leather interior and super track pack. I can imagine how disappointed you are that you can't drive it home. That would have been a blast and a bucket list item checked off.
Way back in the mid eighties, I met a guy who bought a 70 RT Challenger when he either graduated or went into the military, can't recall exact details, but he bought it in San Diego and drove it all the way home to Cincy. That was in 1970. He probably still owns it if he's still on this side of the grass.

Yup, a little bit of my past returned & the idea of a road trip on old Route 66 was a pretty good plan.. Unfortunately reality bit me... I'll get my road trip.. Just gonna make sure it's done the right way..

That’s maybe a good thing to happen when it did, even though disappointing.

Yup, far better in Arlington Tx than two thirds of the way through New Mexico..

In 1996 I flew from Chicago to San Diego, to purchase my 1966 Imperial Crown, after inspecting it during a trucking company general counsel conference three months earlier. Car was a one owner estate sale piece that I bought from an upscale flipper, never test drove it. I spent spent five leisurely days driving back to the Windy City in mid April, trip of a lifetime. The '66 was a crossroad machine, and IMO the zenith of Chrysler's foray into the luxury market. The last Imperial with the full frame, and first year of the 440. After wasting time in the Vegas casinos on the first day out, I ended up sleeping across the front seat instead of checking into my hotel, probably more comfortable. Car ran like new, a true time warp machine, complete with tilt wheel, six way seat, A/C, cruise, power windows, and door locks. Real walnut trim on doors and dash. I put 60,000 additional miles on it the next four years, probably the sweetest daily driver I ever owned.

I know a 67-69 camaro would be the worse vehicle to travel across America in.

Any of the land yachts of 60s-70s wouldn’t be bad though. My GTX has cordoba seats in it, I would travel across America in it.
My friend Bob Miller can attest to that. He owned the '68 Camaro, that his dad bought new, for over 40 years. He has also made two cross country trips with me in GTXs I have owned. The first was 600 miles in "Baby Blue", the blue '68 we both owned at different times in the 80s, driving from Kingsport, Tennessee to Frederick, Maryland, when I bought the car for the second time in 2013. The weather couldn't have been worse, and it was a testimony to the car's maintenance history that wipers, lights, and defroster still worked like new. Three years later, we flew out to Iowa together, and drove a '69 Track Pak GTX with the original 3:54 Dana 1300 miles back to Maryland. I'll never forget Bob's words on the last day out, when he said, "if this car was a 60s Camaro, we would be hating life about now..."

Awesome story! I rode in a friends step moms 68 camaro on power tour in 2016, if you put a piece of cardboard on a concrete floor, you’d probably have a more comfortable seat than a Camaro.

We started the journey in his dads 70 Charger, 4 guys, all of our luggage, a pop up tent, a cooler, a bunch of spare parts, including an 8 3/4 center section. The car rode smooth, plenty of room, comfortable seats, ice cold ac, it was nice. Transmission Dip stick seal blew out, ended the trip for the Charger. Rode in the Camaro for a day, exact opposite, I’m 6’, car was cramped, seats suck, I had fun and appreciate them letting me ride with them, but there’s a reason Im a b body guy.

Last year I took my GTX to Vernon Tx from Weatherford for their car cruise. 300 mile round trip, trunk had a spare transmission, and a bunch of spare parts, pop up tent, it was just 2 guys in the car. But with overdrive and cordoba seats, the only way it could have been better was if the ac worked, well also would have been nice to have an attractive female in the passenger seat!
