I Finished building my 440 and was pre-lubing the oil pump with the drill. I had 80 psi on the guage, so i figured all was good. As I turned the engine over it squirted a big blast of oil out of the rocker arms. Is this normal? I thought the top end was only supposed to get minimal oiling? Stock heads stock rockers and pushrods with a melling oil pump.

are your rocker shafts installed correctly?
holes pointed down?

Ya I am pretty sure they are. It squirted out of the second from the back, rocker pedistal mount.

ya,it will squirt all the way over the eng with a good oil pump.its supposed to do that.oil feeds through the rocker shaft and onto the rockers.

The rocker arms are fed oil thru the 4th cam bearing journal back, the camshaft bearing journal has 3 holes drilled in it, and the cam has 2.(look at an old cam) When # 1 piston is at TDC the oil feeds thru the cam journal and up the block passage into the passenger side cyl head and then into the 4th rocker arm pedestal back. then into the rocker shaft and out of the little holes on bottom of shaft. Then as the cam rotates about 1.25 turns, the oil passages line up for the drivers side oil feed, and oil momentarily flows to the driver side rocker arm shaft. So as you can see, each rocker arm shaft is fed oil for a short time per revolution of the camshaft. Hope this helps. But when the engine is stopped, and you prime the pump when the feed holes are lined up, you get a constant flow of oil thru there.

Ya I guess it makes sense, guess the oil passage was lined up when i primed it. Causing it to shoot out like a geyser.

This is funny, Mine shot a cross the room to the other wall made a nice mess for me to clean up lol was certainly caught off guard but made for a good laugh and the knowledge that the oiling is fine :)

if you are standing in the wrong place while priming it can shoot you in the face and chest,i know for certain, lol!
