Pressure relief spring in oil pump

Has anyone ever seen anything like this inside the coils of a 66 Hemi oil pump? If so, what is the purpose?

It's to keep the spring straight while being compressed. My old high volume pump has the same guide.

I agree...its to keep the spring square to the relief valve's plunger to obtain even spring pressure, for accurate, repeatable oil pressure.
