Having the original weak 3 on the tree. Exhausting my efforts on finding a way to use any sort of 3 speed floor shifter and pricing out everything needed for a 4 speed. It looks like the most obvious and economical route is an 904 at least. Anyone done this. Does it truly hurt resale value. Is there another way?? 66 Dodge charger. 318.

I guess if still want to be a 'boy racer', stick with man trans. All my cars have been auto trans....& you can install a man valve body if you are so inclined.

A small block 727 would be more appropriate for your (I'm guessing) 318 poly engine.

Hard to believe getting a good quality 727, flex plate, converter, coolant lines, shift linkage, etc, would be any cheaper than a rebuilt 23 spline 4-speed and shifter assembly. I guess the unknown on my part is if the bellhousing and clutch assembly would swap over to a 4-speed. Either way you will also need a different console plate.

Not sure i agree with this.....mine shifts way, WAY too early although there doesnt seem to be anything wrong with it.... i'd find that car to be way more enjoyable with a three speed (4 speed even moreso) if it was floor shifted as the OP states.

Have yah priced those all out?

Have you priced out a rebuilt A727, converter, flex plate, used or repro shifter, kick down linkage and brackets, coolant lines, and remanufactured driveshaft. You are looking at no less than $2,500 with the cheapest $1600 727 I can immediately spot in a google search.

The cheapest route would be to just swap in a 3-speed floor shifter for $400 plus a console plate change.

So, this car would have the blank no-shifter console plate, since console was standard equipment in 1966. Console became optional for 1967, so, 3-on-the-tree cars would have no cosole, or optional buddy seat.

After holding them for decades, I just recycled 3 or 4 3-speed shifters last year. I may or may not have held onto one of them and can check if you are interested.
