Speedometer Question on GTX

Yes-there were several different 727's used in any particular year. Let say 1969, 383-2 barrel, 383-4 barrel, 440 standard, like a 440 New Yorker, 440-HiPerf, 440-6Pac, and Hemi all used different part numbers. When automatic cars get messed with, 9 out of 10 times. having improperly adjusted or removed kickdown linkage destroyed many transmissions. Smallblocks are the same way. Post up the PK part numbers on the pan rail, and we can tell you if you have the right trans for your car.
Ok. Climbed under the car this morning to take a look. Here’s the number on the pan rail.

From Galen's little white book. 69 A<B<C bodies 383-4 and 440. I know in 69 that 383 and 440 used different trans. I'll look in my 69 part manual tonite, I'm just walking out the door to work right now.

The VIN stamp on the passenger side of the transmission has "9G223223" stamped on the flat pad. I think that means the transmission was built in St. Louis in 1969 (could be wrong). So not the original 727 auto regardless, but at least a 69 model year transmission.

Transmission 2892093 is correct for your car

Chrysler 1969 8-440-375HP
Dodge 1969 8-440
Plymouth 1969 8-383 4BC-335HP
Plymouth 1969 8-440

What you shared is the stamp on the side of the transmission. But my car is a 1969 Hemi GTX. Does that mean that this is not the correct transmission? If not, what would be the primary difference between a transmission behind a 440 and a transmission behind a 426?

Transmission 2892094 for a 1969 Hemi 426
Dodge 1969-426
Plymouth 1969-426

Hemi Transmission has 21/2 in wide kick down band, 5.1 kick down lever and 5 clutch front drum, 4 pinions front, rear, and takes a 19 spline converter.

Going back to my post #8, all you have to do is calculate the tire diameter, and now you know the ratio....from there you can determine what size (number of teeth) speedometer gear drive you need for the transmission.

There is nothing wrong with your speedometer.

You will likely have to try and buy a different size gear for your transmission....about $50.

Probably a 33 tooth gear
as a starting point - dependant upon your tire size.

I am willing to bet that a previous owner raced the car, or just like revving the engine while driving around.

So to your point, do you think that the transmission that is currently in the car will be a problem, or will it still do what is intended, particularly if I am just planning on driving (not racing) the car?

2892093 transmission is a well-built unit, on street tires you should have no problems. The problem occurs when you have slicks (sticky tires) and you launch the car hard and the tires don't spin, that's when parts in the transmission start to break!!

Thanks. This is meant to be a street car. Not planning on hitting the strip with it. And will only wear radials because I intend to drive the heck out of it.
