I have read that the average person loses approx 50% of their night vision by age 40. It is so gradual its's hard to notice the decline, and our brain compensates to a large degree until it gets overwhelmed as it indicated here by many. I think the problem here really is the inability to adapt to the range of contrast vs just adding more light. Adding light actually reduces the contrast, and makes it easier to see the weld process.Exactly my issue. I need lots of back lighting and even then, they don’t adjust quickly when the arc initiates and don’t seem to want to adjust with changes in distance.
