Your 'Guide' to the 727/904 transmission

need help with my transmission please

I bought a jeep few months a go. It has fuel injected Chevy engine and dodge tranny .my problem is identifying the tranny that's in it, and diagnosing my current problem with it. Every single gear I put it in is drive even park. But park holds it from moving. I was thinking valve body issue or an internal leak. Also the aka kick down is not hooked up sbc how would I be able to accomplish that with Chevy set up.

sounds like the shifter valve and the rooster comb are not in connected anymore, but you will have to drop the pan to look. at this point it can be a lot of things. check out the throttle lever shaft to see if the manual lever assembly (rooster comb) tang is slotted in the manual valve. If it is not.. then that explains why you only have drive. Only a visual inspection will help with diagnosis... until then we can guess until the cows come home.

wish I could be of more help.

ill pull the pan off in the next couple days and let you know thanks for the insight. it does go into reverse when moving down the road tried that trick last night on the way home . slammed it in reverse it locked the back tires up but wouldnt go backwards acted like i had a trans brake on . tried that several times same result . let it sit for a moment and than it would be in drive again . but i would go into neutral while moving but once i get to lower speed it jumps back into drive .

sounds more internal than anything, and for the record.. reverse drops will destroy your rear sprag. you should never do that.

It might also be worth mentioning that Mopar made TF transmissions to fit OTHER engines like AMC, so if you run into a bell pattern that does not make sense, "that just might be." I believe that a buddy's late model CJ with a 4 whanger is also a TF, so that's another "oddball."

In addition to the really great info, there are some fairly good videos on Youtube:

So I broke the shifter lever off my 727B, anyone know where to get a new shifter lever please?

I'm having a "bog" issue at the track and have adjusted the carb, timing etc and and do not seem to be getting anywhere with that. Last night my son suggested that we look at the transmission I'm willing to look at anything now so her's what's happening: Under normal/heavy acceleration the car will take of smoothly and shift normally, but under "hard" acceleration (stomping the pedal at the track) the car will jump off the line and then at 3000 RPM it'll bog. if we lift and then reapply to get it past that initial 3000RPM bog the car will fly. This happens whether we shift manually or let it shift on its own. The engine is a street/strip 360 wih 9.5 compression, a Comp XE274 H cam, and Edelbrock Airgap intake. The trans is a non-lockup 904 that my son and I rebuilt a few years ago with a kit from Mancini, we also installed a B&M shift kit and a Mopar Performance "k175" converter (by the way does anybody happen to know the stall speed, I used to but forgot). The shifter is the factory slapstick and the stock kickdown lingage is not compatible with the intake so I'm using a Lokar cable. Any ideas?

My guess is that its an ignition issue if it is happening at 3000 rpm at all times.. i would check your distributor (i am totally not a distributor guy mind you) to see if there are any issues and possibly look at your ECU.

can i fix this one with a little JB weld ? :toothy6::toothy6::toothy6::toothy6:

Still can't locate matching transmission number

I can not locate my VIN number on my 727. I have an AAR 'Cuda and have been able to match all numbers except the transmission. My transmission case looks EXACTLY like the one in your picture below, and for the life of me, I don't see a number on that picture either.
Is the number viewable with the transmission installed in the car? What am I missing? Any help from forum members, especially the original poster, will be appreciated.

Often I or anyone for that matter asks to find out what type of transmission they have in their old mopar. There are hundreds, if not a thousand, of threads on this website identifying, discussing or assisting with this process, troubleshooting or repair.

Because of this large number of threads and the fact that using the search option is unbeknownst to some members, I have put this together.

The passenger side carries with it (if its 69 model year only) the complete VIN of the vehicle, 1970 and above have the year, place of manufacturer, and serial number of the vehicle it was made for, see below:

Look on the pan rail

If the pad is blank then it is a warranty transmission, your VIN would not be on your AAR anyway as the full VIN was only done in 69 year, you would have had a partial VIN on the pass side boss/pad in 70

I have a 727 that has damage to the direct drive. It is the 4 clutch type and I am wondering if I could switch it fior the 3 clutch type.

The three clutch drum will interchange but you are giving up third gear durability in the process

Looking at putting a 318 that originally came out of motorhome and a 904 transmission that came off a pickup truck into my 67 Plymouth (car). I have read in a earlier post that their are some differences with 904 transmissions for trucks mentioning a difference between a truck and a car tailhousing but doesn't go into detail on whether it will swap or what modifications would need to be made to use it in a car.
If anybody has any has any information or experience with this I would appreciate your input.
Thanks

Is it possible to modify a manual valve body from a 66- to make it work with a 1964 Tf 727 column shift?
I´ve made a thread about this but didn´t get so much feedback.. Someone wrote that i just have to swap the roostercomb, ball and spring. But it´s just one that have written that so i just want confirmination..
so i´ll try here..
