Hey...sorry to bug you guys, but I can't find any info with a search!
I might be using the wrong search terms though...:icon_confused:

Have the 78 Charger big disc assemblies put on my 63 330 and the banjo bolts seem likely to hit the shock bolt area of the control arm!
Now this is at full droop and full lock but it still concerns me!

Did I do something wrong here? :confused4:

Am I being too fussy or is there an issue, and if so...how do I fix it!?!?

Can you post a pic so we can get a better idea?

On my 66, there is a nipple or tang cast into the LBJ housing.
When turned to full lock, the LBJ nipple hits the LCA, preventing what you are describing.
This may actually be the "lock" that is refered to.
It's very close, like 1/8" gap, but it works.

Didn't think on putting up a pic...:icon_redface:

Wondering...is the caliper usually mounted in front or in back with these swaps?

Ah, mine are in back to clear the swaybar.
That tang is right under your caliper, and the caliper probably stecks out more.
I'm 99% you can swap them L to R.

wait...is that the rear? show us the caliper side.

You have the wrong the cailpers. This is for rear mount calipers. This will solve your problem. I went through that a few years ago.

The calipers part # are Cardone 18-4144 and 18-4145.
brakes hoses are BrakeBest
part # BH99069

Man...you gotta be kidding!?!?
The wrong calipers...AND hoses?
I had to order these and I ordered the ones to fit a 78 Charger, which is what the spindles came off of.

This sucks completely. I'm likely gonna have to eat the cost!

I gotta TRY to cross reference those parts...
Hmmm, any idea what they were original to?

Those Cardone calipers appear to be slider units...mine are pin units.
You're saying I need to change my brackets too so I can use these as no pin type will work???

I have a friend working on the brakes while I'm doing other unrelated stuff at home.
I'm gonna have to go have a good look at all this myself.
I can't see having to change out all this stuff...

Just found info... Looks like I needed calipers and hoses for a 70-72 B-body or a 70-74 E-body.
Thats the pin type with the different hole boss apparently.

darn....

Sorry I didn't realized you had the pin type. I haven't used that type before. Hopefully the ones you identified work.

My whole setup is from an 87 5th Ave. Sliders. It's close in that area but the tang hits first.
Try it and see what happens.
You want the maximum travel, so if there's only 1/8 inch, that's OK.
You may need different hoses. I'm using the part # for a 73 satellite or 78/79 Cordoba (it's the same).

Picked up hoses and the calipers will be at the supplier tomorrow.
Hoses were $90.00 tax in...calipers will be a smidge less.
Expensive lesson on doing homework better!
This stuff is for a 70-72 Charger or a 70-74 Challenger.

At least these parts, IF they turn out to be incorrect are returnable!
The other hoses and banjo bolts were special order...the calipers I've had for too long to return, so I'm stuck with the lot of it.

WTF? Is that a typo? My hoses were $13 from RockAuto.

I have noticed pin type stuff is more expensive.

I can get ceramic pads for the sliders for $18 (D85?)...the pin type pads (D84?) are $38 and up, and $70 is a popular price.

Speaking of pins- Which one goes in front, the long one or the short one?

I didn't notice they were different until I had it back together, and saw a pic online.

Wondering if I got it wrong.

Question, Can the spindles and parts be switched to to the other side if they are supposed to go on the rear mounting? or did I miss something on the thread?

No typo YY1...but they had them in stock!
My usual spot for parts would have had them cheaper (I checked them first), BUT they had to order them from a supplier outside their usual channels so I would have had to pay shipping AND wait for two weeks. Might have saved 5 bucks!

Jag...not sure but considering the way things swing and the mounting locations front or back, I'm doubtful it would make any difference to the clearance issue.
Could be totally wrong...but regardless I'll feel better driving If I KNOW there are no potential issues.

My research indiactes they can swap side to side.

I don't even remember how mine were installed on the FA.
I just mounted them how I needed them.
I think I remember mocking them up either way though.

I want to mount the calipers to the rear as I intend to add a swaybar in the future and I THINK I need the extra room to make it easier.

Got the calipers...just over a $100.00 tax in (jobber price) and went to my buds shop for a quick and dirty trial fit.
The 78 Charger pads seem to fit the 72 calipers as do the slider bolts, the calipers seem to fit the 78 brackets and theres lots of clearance for the hose fittings.
Looks like I will have to relocate the frame mount for the flex hose but thats not a big deal.

The actual finish installation will tell the full tale...but it certainly appears everything will work now.
I'll up date this thread with the final verdict (good or bad) once this is completed down the road...
Thanks guys!!!

You are on top of it, the later B-body calipers hit at full lock. I believe 73 up are the ones to stay away from as I have a friend that pulled the disc brakes from a 73 roadrunner and ran into the same problem. As you stated we change his 70-72 B body or 70-74 E body calipers and he has no problems now. Good luck!
Matt

Wonder could someone post a pic showing the factory routing of the caliper flex hose for a 70-72 Charger or a Challenger?
NOT as easy to find with a search as you might expect!!!

With my quick and dirty mock up to the 63, it looked like I needed to change the frame mount for the hose...but I just saw a poor picture that SEEMED to show the original location for those later B's was to have the bracket at the rear.
Don't want to move the bracket if I don't have too!

Thanks!
