I'm starting a build for a pro touring 1970 Charger.

It's going to be a 605" Hemi. 750-800 HP, pump gas.

Mopar performance block,
Stage V raised exhaust port heads and rockers
Hydraulic roller cam
Callies 4.75 stroke
Oliver 7" rod
Custom Diamond pistons
Single 4 bbl, possilby an SV-1
Dvorak stands
Gary's rocker shafts
More, of course.

It will be coupled to a Turbo 400 with a Gear Vendors overdrive.

Anyway, I'll be posting pictures of the progress on my business Facebook page if anyone is interested in following along.

Look up "Cedar Machine Service" on FB

Thanks, Ron

Nice cant wait to see this

It's not mine, it's a customer's. I'll keep up to date as I go, all the way to dynoing it. Then it gets shipped.

I am building one for myself too. A real rat rod type 426. Piecing it together.

Are you building locomotive engines now?

This will be a good thread to follow.

I have a buddy who works on the old steam engine powered train that runs out of Mpls. I'm sure he could start a thread on a restoration!

Finally back on track with this project as some parts are rolling in. I decided to go with the standard height ext. ports as they are well up to the job.

I have posted some pictures of the Stage V head compared to the OEM Hemi head on my FB page. I have not measured the port differences in volume yet, but lets just say they are big, and have plenty of material to go bigger.

The porting on the guide boss areas is next, then I will install guides and finish the seats and the rest of the port work.

Pictures from my phone, sorry for the lighting....or lack thereof.

I wouldn't think SV-1 and pro-touring would work very well together. I can't imagine that carb having very good part throttle cruise attributes. Why not EFI?

I don't know that the SV -1 is worse than most Dominators, but I am going to talk to Patrick when I get to that point.

Honestly, I would like to see an EFI setup, and it may get one in the future. He just wants to get the car together in the simplest form at this point. Who knows, it may get run for a year or two and come back for different pistons/cam and get a pro charger...

Stage V heads, progress.

The heads are roughed out to where I can out the guides in, hone them and profile the seats. Profiles are cut, checked for concentricity, and the seat angle it touched off with a fine stone to get the runout to zero and the finish correct.

I will have some flow numbers soon.

They are custom 50 degree seats. 5 angle intake, radius exhaust. 2.3" intake 1.9 exhaust. Custom valves.

So I'm seeing the Cedar Machine Service and it didn't click until now. I have a customer/friend in Blaine, who used to be in Ham Lake. One person lives in Coon Rapids, another in East Bethel and one in Cambridge. I have been up and down hwy 65 when I visited in 2013 for the Back to the 50's, and realize I was in your back yard! Next time I'm up there I'd love to swing by! You definitely have some cool stuff going on there. I bought a crank from another shop that's in Cedar. I'm sure you know Chuck Lofgren?

Actually, Blaine is just southwest of me. I'm in North Branch. The "Cedar" came from "Cedar Ave" which was right behind the shop in 1990 when I opened in Eagan.

I know of Lofgren, but I've never done any work for them. I don't really know much about them.

Get ahold of me if you're in town. I'm always here. My buddy has a dyno shop just 5 miles down the road too.

NB isn't that far away so I will definitely make a point of visiting you. Probably around the upcoming Back to the 50's meet.

Sounds great. I'll make sure the Charger is here so we can go for a spin out on the back country roads. There is a place a couple towns over that has buffalo wings that are worth the trip alone!

I liked the SV1's so much I use 2. Very tunable and o/2 sensors will make tuning a breeze.

But being they are on a vacuum pump might make it easier to deal with? Crazy looking carbs for sure and will probably suck your head in if you stand too close.

Sold! But I will likely show up with a couple of locals - as I will be at their mercy for transportation. I appreciate the offer and hope to see you in the near future. And have some good food!

More Hemi pics. Just got more parts in so I can get rolling again.

Pin bore sizing, balancing the rotating assembly, final solvent and spray washing parts.

The pistons are custom Diamond, internal max light milled, wire locks, H-13 tool steel pins. .170 wall.

Notice how close the Callies Magnum crank is for balance correction. 48 grams on one end and 60 on the other. It pays to buy the best! This will be an easy balance job.

The rods are Oliver Max series billet. They are of the best steel rods made.

Some more pics of the block machining.

Notice the chatter in the main bores when I run the hone through. After torque cycling the fasteners, I could hone the mains .001". That said, there was still some reference marking from the factory line boring. image.jpgimage.jpg

This engine will be getting a Turbo 400 with a Gear Vendors overdrive. The next few pics are machining the block for the dowel pins using a BHJ fixture, and adding mounting bolt holes. The Mopar performance block has bosses cast in for this. The last pic is checking runout on an actual powerglide case bolted up. image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

The last couple pics are indexing and squaring up the block with a BHJ Blok-Tru. The surface is cut for MLS gaskets. image.jpgimage.jpg

Not much dome on those pistons to get in the way of flame travel. I suppose that's what happens when dealing with 605". You sure have the equipment and I can't wait for the tour. Last I checked BHJ is in Union City CA, which is about 20 mins from my work. They have a block align boring jig that also does the cam bore.

And speaking of that, do you notice that cams never seem to fit properly even with new bearings? Sure, popping in a set of cam bearings and making sure the cam doesn't bind will work, but the factory spec for most cam bearing clearance hovers about .001" or less. And you can't get there unless you install undersize bearings and align hone them. I can only reason this out based on my experience as a mech tech but never did any automotive machine work. How do you deal with this issue? Back to that BHJ fixture?
