I'm Thinking I Should be Getting More Oil

Fired up the 440 today and I'm just going over different things. This engine has the cam broke in but hasn't seen any asphalt yet. Oil pressure is 40 lbs at idle and off idle will go to 80 lbs. I thought I would pull the valve cover fill cap and see what kind of oil I am getting to the rockers.

I'm thinking it should be more of a cascade of oil taking place but the video will show what I'm seeing. Increasing the rpms doesn't make much difference.

Hydraulic lifters, .020 preload. Summit 6401 cam.
Solid pushrod
Yes the shaft holes are down and out.
Crane adjustable rockers

My /6 just kinda oozeez out at less then a dribble's pace, if that answers your question. If you have pressure, that's what's important as it doesn't take much to oil the top end.

Never dealt with BB Wedge but looks pretty dry. Put a SB 318 rocker assembly on one side wrong and a pushrod went threw rocker, no or little oil.

I'm no expert, but I remember using Rocker Stoppers on my Pontiac 400 motor so we could adjust the rockers while it was running. They are to control the oil spray while making adjustments. I had good oil pressure on that car, and even when one fell off, there wasn't a ton of oil coming out of there. Just enough to make a mess if you didn't have those, but not a steady stream shooting out like you would think.

Seeing the frequency of the dripping from the rocker shaft when the camera pans to the left seems about right for what I remember it being. It may have been a bit more on mine, but not a lot. I just remember it didn't flow enough to run over the edges of the head with the valve cover off like I thought it would. Though I do remember a friend cutting the top off an old set of valve covers to be able to adjust without it running over.

Granted, that was quite a while ago.

If you don’t have the cam ground for full time oiling, that looks right to me.

Hi

I assume this is a fresh engine? If not did the cam bearings get installed properly? I had same rockers in my 440 and I ended up putting banana cuts like the T/A rockers and that helped alot.

What does it look like when you rev it up to say 2k 3k etc? If the volume of oil doesn't change, I say you might have a problem.

You have an issue there...
Care to elaborate?

The cam bearings were right. Priming by hand, one side then the other, there was all kinds of oil.

I thought about cutting groves at the oiling holes but opted out when doing the build. Its still not out of the question.

Looks similar to what Andy was getting, even with the Harland sharps

I'm wanting one of those valve covers! Thanks for the video.

I'm not seeing much difference if any.

Like said before, what's it look like with more rpm? Stock block with no restrictions in the oil feed hole? Doesn't look bad to me for idle....

Yep, stock block, no restrictions.

I'm going to check it out a little more when the weather warms up again. It got up to the mid fifties today. I have to run it outside because of the garage. The wind is always blowing in the door, even with a couple of shop fans running. It started raining shortly after taking the video and had to bring it back inside.

Thanks Peeps for the comments. It's been awhile since I've had a BB running.

Another question....is it a regular pump or HV? If it's HV, then yeah, it should be pumping more up stairs.

Is there anyway to assembly the rocker arm backward on shafts? Meaning the side facing valves should be facing pushrods. In other words turn the shafts around and remount rockers. The#18 I said was messed up that and just one side I did wrong.

Yes it's a HV oil pump. 40 lbs @ idle, 70-80 lbs, @2000 on up. "Pumping more upstairs" is why I'm questioning what I'm seeing.

You can install the rocker shafts wrong. The oiling holes are off center to the hold down bolts. The oiling holes have to be pointed down and toward the valves, down and out. Mine are installed correctly.

I ran shafts with “home-ported” oil holes( a little elongated) years ago. 4yrs drag racing and never a problem. BB’s don’t spray like the Gm’s. I don’t think I’d worry too much.

I got t&d rockers that have internal oil passages so if they’re not set up right no oil, maybe look into it if yours had a similar set up

Because of the way Mopars are fed threw the shafts they aren't going to throw oil all over the place like the crappy Chevy setup. I think if you didn't have solid pushrods you'd see more oil upstairs?

The Crane rocker has these passages. I used a piece of red wire to show the routing.
(Actually the top two are Elgin rockers but are ported the same.)
