My stuff, their junk.

When I watched my son’s car go down the road this past summer it got me to thinking, he’s not here to get my stuff, who will get my stuff? I’m an open book, loyal and very honest. Yes, I do have two daughters. They are more reserved and not as open about themselves and for that reason I won’t get into their life’s. I will say, for the sake of this thread, that both are professionals in the medical industry. One is still practicing medicine and the other never did, even after passing her boards. She and her husband own 13 winter recreation facilities all around the country and a shipping business outside of this country. My point is they do not care for or need my stuff, which they call JUNK. They have said my wife and I should go and do anything, anywhere and spend our money on us and not worry about them. They have told us what a hassle they will have when we are gone dealing with my stuff, to them, JUNK. So that means all the stuff I have been saving all my life, stamps, model cars, metal signs, old license plates, coins, mechanic tools, guns, antique lights, antique furniture, car parts, metal draw cabinets full of every bolt, screw known to God, cars, my furniture making tools and equipment, dozens and dozens of boxes full of stuff and the list goes on, needs to be dealt with. You see, our stuff, when we’re gone, may become someone’s junk to deal with! A few days ago I commended on dadsbee’s air filter. I said it would make a nice picture frame for a car part to hang in it on the wall , as he said, fella, that is a day one OE oval filter. I figured that. I said it could be done without hurting it. When it was all said and done, he got it. Besides us, who knows that it’s a sweet piece of history, for me anyway and yes we’re going to add it to our stuff. For some of us, when we’re gone, that old filter in going in the trash and some may say, what the hell did he keep this old piece of **** for!! So now, I’m using it, hanging it, to make sure I get my wear out of it! My 65 I will drive and wear out, fix it and keep repeating because, I get it now!...... But,

I invited some of my son’s old friends that have been by my side after he passed, never left my side and visit several times a month, over to talk about this. They know the girls very well and know they are not trying to be rude and are just being honest. They are minimalist and would never know what to do with all my stuff, JUNK. I gave all my long guns, 15, with the safe, all my tools, that I don’t use all the time, TOD’ed all my cars, including my 65, with an understanding that they get all of it after I’m gone. After my wife passes away, they get half of everything I own. My son would have loved us doing this and the girls don’t mind. They will carry on with it and I know it’s taken care of, you know, all my bitchin stuff!!!! What do you all think and what are you all going to do? Remember, you can’t take it with you!!

I don't know about anyone else, but I plan on sending it ahead of me so it will be in heaven when I arrive, LOL! :D

Funny, I just got off the phone with a buddy of mine talking about the same thing.

I started selling my large and high dollar items years ago so my wife wont have to deal with them when I reach room temperature.

Sorry to hear that your daughters have no interest. Look at it this way you taught them well were they do not need help from you. Thats A Blessing. We all collect crap but one mans junk is another mans treasure. Maybe you have a nephew that would want your stuff.

After my dads latest episode & his mortality in question
I have made sure, that my stuff is in order...

My nephew Keith ( I raised) will get my cars/trucks
probably the automotive & construction tools,
all my golf ****/tools, guns, artwork too
He is gonna' be the executor of the will,
he can do what he wants, with my stuff...

but;
he's only 16 years younger than I am...

Any funds & the house/s is divided evenly, by 6
+10% to Keith for the hassles & final expenses not foreseen...

I'm not really sure he'll know what to do with some of it
he's smart & will figure it out...
If the stuff is still around & has value...
I hope it helps him with something he wants to do,
his hobbies or family...

But at-least he likes the stuff, Keith shows some interest
he does know guns & golf well
he tries with automotive or construction stuff...
He calls me every time he works on something,
has a good understanding & is quick learner,
he's a good family man with 2 girls
he's also eager to learn, but really doesn't know that much about cars
he knows basics & does a lot of his own projects...

but;
he knows if I kept it , it has some value
or it wouldn't still be here

the son in-laws, may want some stuff
they are 4x4 guys & a sports car guy

depends if James (my boy) is still in the Navy,
right now, he doesn't have a good place for all/any of my stuff
& he's never home, always traveling

I don't think the girls (3 & my niece) know what to do with the car
the trucks they'd probably use

Keith (nephew) will be fair with all the personal possessions
there's certain things he knows goes to certain family/people too

I set up a living trust, I've done a will too,
it was set up by a lawyer & a finance guy...
I hope that eases the burden, when I'm worm food...

If I still have animals, or a dog etc.,
My girls or Keith will take them, give them a loving home...

I always loved that bit

You’ll be dead. Enjoy your collection now and while your here. When you’re gone you won’t know either way what they do with it.

First, I'm very sorry about your son and I'll pray for you and your family.

Second, your stuff is not junk... If it's important to you and brings you joy, then it's worth more than gold!

Third, your relationships and love for your daughters is worth far more than your "stuff" that they're not interested in. Also, don't take it personal that they're not interested in the things you are. After over thirty years of working on this old farmhouse, my son doesn't want anything to do with it or any other old house. Sometimes that hurts, but he's his own person (which I'm proud of) and we have a great relationship despite different interests as I'm sure you do with your daughters.

To answer your question... I would probably spread your things out with many different people that you're close to. Think of the joy that would bring not just to them, but you as well knowing what you've worked for all your life is going to folks who will appreciate it. It doesn't all have to go to one person, it can go to many and you would know who would appreciate what the most.

Good luck with this and thanks for sharing.... God Bless!

Well, some want to leave everything to their kids....and some do not. My thinking was to leave my home to the kids but after my divorce and not hearing much from my youngest I'm thinking about leaving everything and my junk to other entities. Once I'm gone, it just doesn't matter anymore but have been getting rid of a lot of stuff over the last couple of years just to benefit me....mainly because I have to. :(

I'm the absolute last one in my family line.
I am married, but I don't have any children, and my dad and mom were also only children, so no close cousins, etc.
By law, I think my wife gets at least half of my debt and assets if I go before her (likely). Without a will, she gets 100%
I am not particularly fond of her only son, who recently got married and now is expecting a son.
Long story short, that could have been my son and grandson, but my wife took a long time to figure out I was right about us when we were 18....
So I have thought about leaving some of my possessions to charity, and the rest goes to my wife, but that is mainly so her son doesn't get it.
Complicated issue for me.
I may just leave everything to her.
I may want to leave my Roadrunner to someone, no PMs please! :D:poke:

junk, what is junk something that know one wants or they don't know the true value of junk. the value you speak of can't be bought and the value or understanding of the junk is what needs to be told. how you built the car of your dreams to share or pass on to your kids. do they know that you hand built it looking for parts and finding them in wrecking yards or trading work to get that special emblem to make the car just right. do they know that you collecting hot wheels was something they like to play with when they were little. how about your tools well for me not only will they be something to hand but do they understand that those tools is what got them in med school. sometimes its better to tell the story of the junk and then it becomes stuff they may want to keep.

I'm planning leaving my 'stuff' to a Christian entity.....

Not sure how to say this...but recently, I could care less about what my kids get anymore...looks like I just said it :D

I could never stoop to that level, I'll just come right out and say it right here! I am the most appreciative and deserving person alive! You may select me as a possible recipient if ever you feel the need. I would be most gracious to accept, so rest easy. Your RR would be in good hands! LOL
Actually, I got rid of a whole lot of good stuff when I almost sold my house 2 years ago. What's left would easily fill about 3 pods, and that doesn't include household furniture and that's a low estimate! God help anyone left who might have to deal with it! Except for my (toy) and some tools, it's all outdated and unwanted and made in USA, but that's what dumpsters are for! LOL
On the serious side, my father has a whole bunch of crap and it's all over the place. We are going to have a hell of a time dealing with it when he passes. I am in fact trying to lighten the load on others unloading what I can. I could not function without some sort of filing system. Most of my stuff is pretty straight forward and in order and not co-mingled all over the place. Fortunately, I have 3 brothers and a sister in fairly close proximity to my parents house and between us 2 pickup trucks and 2 vans. Not looking forward to the eventual clean out!
