Original Carter 4 Barrel, stalls when shifted in to gear

Just to say rebuilt a 650 CFM Holley. That came on my 383. Now have the car running. IT start's and runs well but has hesitation. So I am working out the bug's in that carb. Going up on my jet size. Shows my motor running to lean. Set every thing up with a vacuum gage. Your timing could be a hair off. I set mine by ear for years. Have used a timing light behind that and was spot on. Same with the air idle adjustment on the carb. Check your plug's and see what color they are. This may give you an Idea if your to lean or too rich.
 
I under stand that for sure. Not getting too far from home till I get all the bug's worked out of my new rebuilt runner. Some times it takes time to figure out what is going on. Wish we all could be more help. Just don't change too much at one time then you don't know what or where the problem is at.

Too lean is a possibility.

That's Thriller. I bought it as a shell from a guy who bought it on a pallet. There was nothing in front of the firewall but he knew the VIN was good.
It is an original 4 speed, still has that trans and Hurst pistol grip. A shop put the engine and trans in it and everything but the interior which I did and am glad of it - I give a **** so it came out really good! Those insane orange seats are what the car came with so I replaced the covers with the same factory color. I polished ALL of the stainless and aluminum alloy trim. I restored the tail lights:blah::blah::blah::realcrazy: A lot of work.

I remember when I pulled in to the class at that show and how the other competitors had that look that said: Oh, ****...
The guy in the orange Camaro was not happy at all. His car ran like **** and he couldn't keep it running without keeping his foot on the gas. Thriller kicked right over and idled perrrrfect. NONE of the other cars sounded like that! Keep in mind, there was only one other Mopar in that class driven by a little old lady. I watched as people attending the show saw the 'Cuda and just went straight to it - it sucked the life out of the whole class!:D
Jeff, the GTO guy, helped me get that car ready for that show. We were up until 11pm by the time it was loaded in the trailer.

C'MON, tell me about YOUR sweet machine!
My car is a 1963 Dodge Polara 440. It is an original race car, with only 7,700 original miles. I did not build the car, but I did build the current engine.
It was mini-tubbed some time in the early to mid 60's, based on the info that I received from the seller. I am the 3rd owner.
When I bought the car, it had a stroker motor based on a 400, with somewhere around 13.0 to 1 compression. It also had a 4.88 full spool and a super high stall speed. It was a 10 second car, but definitely NOT streetable.
When the engine spun a bearing, I built a 1969 440, 30 over with 11 to 1 compression. I changed the TC to a more streetable 2800 stall and I removed the spool and replaced it with 3.91 sure trac in a 489 case.
The car was originally yellow, and was purchased in NC by a race team from Ohio. The current bodywork and paint job was completed in 1989 by the 2nd owner. I would love to redo the car again, with the tubs and cage up to current specs and technology, but I am also hesitant, because it's so nostalgic. There are still class win stickers in the window from 1964.
Unfortunately, I don't drive as much as I want to, it mostly just sits in my shop. My 440 Power Wagon gets way more attention.

Have you raced it? A roll cage would seem really intrusive on something that classic. I really like the two tone paint job. That's a hefty compression ratio. I have a drag car barn find that has 11:1 and a really good 4:10 rear end and after about 30 min, the thrill is gone so I can imagine what 4.88 is like. Do you have any photos of it on the track? What's the interior like? Is it two tone also? Is that an aluminum hood?

I know you've posted a lot of this information before - sorry to have you repeat it. I couldn't tell if it had a roll cage so sorry for misunderstanding. I'll bet it sounds wicked! You should post some photos of it at the track. That could be a whole thread where people post that kind of photo. It's none of my business but where did you move from? It's also none of my business to ask why you gave up being a trainer and having a gym. I've had several trainers over the years. Right now, he's online! Never thought that would work.

I moved to N.C. from N.J. in 2015. I just couldn't take the high property taxes anymore. I was paying over $16,000 a year in property taxes, and they seemed to go up every few years, while the quality of life went down.
I became partners in a World Gym almost by accident. My best friend Chris owned it with his brother Anthony. Anthony was a CPA and was nothing but the financial backing for the gym, Chris was the driving force. Well, the company that Anthony worked for was transferring him to Atlanta and he wanted out of the gym. I guess I was in the right place at the right time. I bought in at 50% in 2000. By 2005, we had over 3,000 members and I had started a fitness nutrition company that supplied meals to bodybuilders, made fresh protein cookies and muffins and all natural protein shakes and smoothies. I had 33 juice bars in gyms from the Tri-State area down to Richmond, Va. When the market crashed in 2007, the fitness industry took it hard. I hung on until 2010, but the dismal recovery led by OBummer finally did me in. I retired from the professional bodybuilding circuit and sold off the businesses. I was a Union Ironworker, so I still had a steady income, but I needed a break anyway.
Now in 2021, I am an Owner/Operator trucker and enjoy the peaceful tranquility of the South. A big change from the NYC metro area where I spent my entire life.
So now you know my story. Sorry to bore you. LOL

Not boring and I appreciate your answering my question. I lived in NJ for...too long! Got out in 1996 after two nearly back to back blizzard years. AND the taxes were ridiculous. Not to mention cost of living. I had crappy neighbors except for the race car driver Snap On tool guy next door.
Ironworker - are you one of those crazy guys who works out on girders in the middle of the air? Tough job. I've done pipe welding school and that's not as tough as what you do.
Can't say which is worse, the baby killing damn DemocRATS or the worthless coward Repubics. In this state, the ones doing the most to fight this stuff are citizens, not legislators. Sorry to hear about your business. Unfortunately you weren't alone. When you were a pro BB did you ever meet Bev Francis? She has a gym in the NY area. That's tough too to maintain a competition physique. I think everyone should have the experience of putting on a posing suit and get on stage in front of a crowd. Maybe it would help them to think twice about the crap they eat.
This state is a big improvement over NJ but is full of F'd up damn Democrats and RINOs. Two of the worst Senators in the country are Rand Paul and Mitch McConnell but I digress.
A friend of mine is a truck driver, Bill Fish aka Driver Bill. He was short haul so you may not have ever crossed paths. Two heart attacks and he's only 50. Of course he eats healthy and takes care of himself...
 
This carburetor was just rebuilt by an expert. Starts and runs well, not perfect but needs to be driven as it sat most of last year. I've adjusted curb idle and idle mixture screws.
I'm going to try and adjust the timing next but if anyone has any advice, I'd appreciate it.

I'm a little late to the party...but....after reading all the previous posts/suggestions/suppositions, i missed the origional vehicle/engine/carb number, other than the heading about a Carter carb. Later models of Carter carbs are prone to have an off idle stumble-lean condition due to emission control requirements. This lean condition can be easily overcome with minor changes. If you are interested in another opinion, please let me know.....I may be able to offer some suggestions. PM me if interested.
