Engine or Motor ?

Words have to be two of the most loosely used words in the automotive world, so I finally decided to stir the poop pot.

Engine - Internal Combustion

Motor - Generally referred to as Electric


I've never called something engine mounts because I live in Indiana. We call them motor mounts. I guess that would be correct if I owned a Tesla.

Obviously you can tell it's winter and I had nothing better to do this evening. LOL

a motor is defined as any
mechanical device that
moves an object. Be it gas
or electric powered, in it's
precise definition, motor
is electric, engine is gas.
The dead horse has now
been beaten to within a

PS....
In my neck of the woods,
NAPA refers their mounts
as engine or motor.

I voted for both because I use them both...depending on the application/mood.
Pull the motor = remove the engine
In Australia a mechanic is called a "motor mechanic" short for automotive mechanic.
My dad would sometimes call the engine a "moto".
Geez it's not even winter here...

if you work as a technician in a dealer and do warranty work and dont use the right words you dont get paid i.e. a fuse is not blown it is open.

the English did not invent the car so what do they know. there idea of wiring is Lucas ? need i say more

all the dealers i worked for cared about fixing the car right but I'm talking about a warranty clerk not paying for not using correct terminology.

When asked at car shows

Both are terms for something that "does work".

A motor can be an engine.

An engine does not necessarily need to be a power source.

A motor can power an engine.
