Words have to be two of the most loosely used words in the automotive world, so I finally decided to stir the poop pot.

Engine - Internal Combustion

Motor - Generally referred to as Electric

I've never called something engine mounts because I live in Indiana. We call them motor mounts. I guess that would be correct if I owned a Tesla.

Obviously you can tell it's winter and I had nothing better to do this evening. LOL

This one's been bandied about more than once, both within the confines of FBBO as well as within the hobby
as a whole.... potato, potatoe.....

I think that Alexei Sayle begs to differ....

Motor is Pomeranian (English) for car. Alexei is a comedian and he was 'extracting the urine' with this song/noise. :p

I know most know what the
subject relates to during the
conversation. Ol' Bubba ain't
inquiring about the motor
size in your washing
machine.
In the engineering world,
a motor is defined as any
mechanical device that
moves an object. Be it gas
or electric powered, in it's
precise definition, motor
is electric, engine is gas.
The dead horse has now
been beaten to within a
1/4" of it's previous form.
PS....
In my neck of the woods,
NAPA refers their mounts
as engine or motor.

I voted for both because I use them both...depending on the application/mood.
Pull the motor = remove the engine
In Australia a mechanic is called a "motor mechanic" short for automotive mechanic.
My dad would sometimes call the engine a "moto".
Geez it's not even winter here...

A motor is driven by electricity, where an engine is not. However, I do put motor oil in my engine.

if you work as a technician in a dealer and do warranty work and dont use the right words you dont get paid i.e. a fuse is not blown it is open.

“Engine head” doesn’t sound as cool as “Motörhead”.

Pun intended.

Have you ever engine-boated a sweet pair 'o boobies?

Where I'm from, it didn't matter what it was called, as long
as the problem was fixed and the customer was happy
with the results. Open, blown, burnt, or popped.

all the dealers i worked for cared about fixing the car right but I'm talking about a warranty clerk not paying for not using correct terminology.

Wish me happy engining in
my 40 foot enginehome.
Motortrend is going to have
change their name also,
unless they delve completely
into the EV market.
When you're talking about
good ol' American Iron, the
nomenclature is synonymous.
When asked at car shows
"what motor is that?" 100%
of the response will
recognise the question.
It's all in the context of
the conversation.
without a correction
as to it's technical name.

Both are terms for something that "does work".

A motor can be an engine.

An engine does not necessarily need to be a power source.

A motor can power an engine.

My auto shop teacher used to always say washing machines have motors cars have engines.
