Back in the day when I worked at the John Deere dealer we had several farmers with JD 730 diesel tractors that had starter engines on them. They were V4 gas engines that you started and engaged it to turn the crank on the diesel engine to start.

It's in the vernacular of our speech today, it's both ways
readily accepted

I use both frequently, when talking about cars/trucks
even Motorcycles, have an Engine, that's not a good argument
& some have a starter motor too

Motor is more slang meaning in automotive terms, than engine is more direct
that thing/car/truck/van/buggy/rail/altered or Bike/Motorcycle (even bicycles)
had/has a
A Tini Tiny Motor
A Big Motor
A Moutain Motor (org. Top-Sportsman/Pro-Mod & IHRA Pro-Stock, now even NHRA)
A Badass Motor
A Perty' Motor

& Yes a electrical device/direct drive like a fan or not/belt or not/shaft or not
that runs/drives something with electricity powering it, can be/is a motor too
but in electrical terms "an engine" can't be a motor

Seems the Brits/English/Aussies/NZ-ers (a few others I assume)
call a car (the whole thing) a motor...
