Setting up the rocker arm geometry and measuring pushrod length is tedious work, and by far I spent the most time on the valve train than any other component during the build. It's a good idea to just walk away for a day when things aren't going right. I did the same a couple of times.

@CoronetDarter @RemCharger @icetech does any of you guys know if one of the bolts on the thrust plate is supposed to have an oiling hole in it? i just realized i didn't have an oil slinger, so i looked them up to try an see what was needed. and it seems like the slingers aren't even needed. that they weren't even added from factory after like 1975. but a few people were showing that they had an hole on the top left bolt of the thrust plate (that I'm assuming is for oiling.)

Good question. Looking at the engine, the upper left bolt hole should be open to the lifter valley. Oil will pool on the other side of the china wall and eventually run into the hole and dribble down the thrust plate (if the bolt has a hole in it). My engine didn't originally have a bolt hole, but I replaced it with one that did. It's easy to modify; secure the bolt firmly in a vice and drill a small hole down the center. It can be done with a hand held drill, but a drill press would be better.
Also, behind the thrust plate are two small oil gallery holes. The Mopar engine rebuild books instruct the user to install the galley plugs; otherwise you can experience low oil pressures. There are FABO members that claim to have torn down SB engines without the galley plugs installed, without experiencing low oil pressures. I installed them on my build, and staked them per the book's instructions. My cold idle oil pressure is 76 psi.

Some do some dont.. my last 2 318s i tookj apart didn't.. BUT.. what i did was if you look where the plate goes the oil line ends at it with a pipe plug.. i drilled bout a 3/8" hole in the thrust plate and a .060 hole in the pipe plug (hole int he trust plate is so oil can shoot out) so i made it have active cooling.. oil pressure didn't drop a bit

Anyone know what those 2 holes in the block are for? Just above the timing chain?

Got the pushrods installed. Got the roller rockers all adjusted. Got the windage tray and oil pump and pickup installed. Were coming along just fine. Next will be the timing cover, balancer, water pump, oil pan, intake, and distributor. Gonna try for all that this sunday, unless i have to make another 50 trips to the parts store again.

Also, does the windage trey i just added look too far back? I'm looking at the pictures again and it occurs to me that it could probably be moved forward. is there a right or wrong position to lock them into. benefits to more forward or back?

The first hole is the block drain, you'll want that. The second is for a brace to the lower bellhousing. Probably won't fit with headers.
The tray looks too far back, it appears you modified so it would go there. I'd suspect that the main studs are in the wrong position. Also, a locknut or loctite should be used on the nuts.

The holes are just drains, they use normal pipe plugs.. put some pipe dope on them....

I have never had a windage tray, no help there.. sorry

Did you get a timing bolt with the hole? or drill the plate/plug? it's not something you have to do.. but since you are in there... more oil is a good thing

The tray looks too far back, it appears you modified so it would go there. I'd suspect that the main studs are in the wrong position. Also, a locknut or loctite should be used on the nuts.

are we considering the first to be the left or right? and what do you mean by ill want that? do i want to plug it or what? i assume i don't want to leave either of them open.

and I'm absolutely running headers. so what should i be doing with the brace one?.

yeah i looked at the picture after i posted and realized that i may have to the main bolts with the studs in the wrong spot. and yes i modified it to go there not realizing that. is there a disadvantage to leaving it where it is? a pain in the *** to undo and re do but not that big a deal if i need to swap. its all litigated up pretty good. i just used all thread and spacers to get it done instead of buying standoffs.

yeah.. prolly not needed i'm just paranoid, i actually drilled the thrust plate and a .060 hole in the plug in the oil galley. timing chain is getting a bath and yeah.. just put plugs in

ahh thanks.. REM, i couldn't remember if both were drains or not... ohhh that silly bracket! yeah.. my 62 is the only car i have ever had with those..

Left hole is 1/4" pipe, is open to the water jacket. Great spot for two petcocks for future cooling service draining. Rh hole is for a brace as mentioned.

Right. well i am planning on using headers. so i don't think I'm going to use them if they are not required. I have decided I'm going to do the correct thing and not be lazy, ill move the windage tray forward. i am hoping to have most of the engine buttoned up this Sunday and have some pics to put on.

Bought a damper. Neutral balanced. Seems like it's too big. The one I bought. Says 7.3 inches. It's showing that 360 LA motors came with 7.25. The part says it's for a 360 LA or mag between 1964-2003. Any ideas? @RemCharger @icetech. This engine was originally a 1990 d150. Maybe I'd need a different balancer. Or timing cover?
