Coolant in intake port? 440

One of my friends just said they pulled their intake (440) and found coolant pooled above a valve in the port. Can't see any leaks and we had coolant system pressurized a few months ago and it was fine. Any ideas where this might be from? I just can't picture how coolant could get there unless it was poured into the port.
 
I am sure it was left over coolant in the intake manifold. Was the engine loosing coolant before the tear down?
 
Yeah, unfortunately that does sound like a cracked head. It'd have to be cracked into one of the cooling passages and into the intake runner.

Now, I've gotten coolant on top of my pistons when I pulled a head off & coolant in the head flowed downhill into the cylinders, but just taking off the intake, there should be not coolant.
 
What the engine blowing massive white smoke out of the tailpipe?
 
I'm thinking with the intake removed and all the hoses hooked up, you can do a pressure test on the cooling system and watch that port for a leak. Rent a radiator pressure tester from your local parts house if you don't own one.

Good idea! Hadn't thought about that but I'll try this weekend.

This is an excellent way to test,just remove the hoses from heater box n connect together so you can put a good amount of air pressure to block as it may take more than the 12-15 psi that rad cap is set for n this way you won't be putting excessive pressure on heater box just my two cents
 
Any porting done, could have broken through with agressive not knowing what your doing hogging out?? Just putting it out there no offence intended..

No porting that I know of but I'll take a look. Should see any problems with the pressure test.
 
i've had fuel pond on top of intake valves on big blocks. i use shell 93 octane and when it mixes with some carbon it will have a greenish hue. my problem was fuel percolation/fuel vapors from the carb condensating on top of the valve as the engine cooled off (iron heads). i don't think there's any way antifreeze can get on top of a valve, unless the head is cracked or there's some kind of reversion in the intake charge letting coolant from a head gasket or cracked cylinder pond. my bets are fuel related.
 
Get any coolant outta there. It's very corrosive.
