Cousins Pat O’Brien & Jeff Reynolds winched the historic Orange Racecar onto the matching Crewcab Hauler achieving the mating of the two for the first time in nearly 40 years!
The previously owned by John Comstock Belvedere was acquired 10 years ago. It is raced occasionally and looks just darn pretty. The gold leaf Rettig Brothers door callout was exquisitely hand painted then by Chicago BrushMasters artist, Bob Behounek.
The hauler was recently included into the mix. A few gremlins were overcome with what my dad would say “a lot of shits and damns”. On Saturday October 27th 2018 lightning struck again as Bob Behounek once again and 10 years after graced and amazed the few lucky enough to be at this gathering as the gold leaf flowed onto the doors of the hauler. Pat’s friend Scott had previously buffed a shine into that Omaha Orange paint.
The loading was done shortly after the paint dried. The crew that helped, called the “Bermuda Triangle Inc.” for unknown reasons, included Staging Light Steve, Pat O’, Jeff and myself, Haywire. Bob was keenly watching and I believe stayed long enough to touch-up any mishaps. But of course nothing happens in the Bermuda Triangle.
The racecar was seen in the ‘we’re grown up now’ 1979 movie “More American Graffiti”. This movie is worth a second look. Rumors have it there was a fire at the movie studio and a lot of the racing footage was lost. Dreams of Cindy Williams and Ron Howard putting a signature or a greasy hand print on the Belvedere is a big hope of these gearheads.
I thank you for reading this and thanks to this invaluable website for the soapbox. I’ll make my exit just in case the shtf. (I was asked to do this) But like Toad finds out from the classic scene in the movie, sometimes the **** has to fly to make a clean break.

This is awesome. Thanks for sharing!

Very nice! How will the rig be insured? Hopefully no harm will ever come to the combo!
Mike

Awesome!
I'm trying to recall the movie now

I've had the pleasure of driving them both! Hard to imagine driving that setup all over the west coast!

A few more photos, including custom pinstripes added to the ‘64 hauler by Mr. Behounek centered on the nose of the hood. His signature is miniature and almost needs a magnifying glass to read!
As a bonus to the readers there is a music quiz in my original story. The time frame is around Woodstock and at this festival was a band who’s name can be found above. So as not to give it away, Please, just answer using the lighting fast guitarist initials of that Huge rock group.

:thankyou: for sharing with US

Remember the car very well, raced with John Comstock many years. He helped me get my start in NSS racing. Good to see the car again.

Awesome !! That 63 was in the second American Grafitti movie. Thanks for posting this. Ron

A.L. is the correct answer to the hidden rock band name in the original post. Thanks fwi, you were lightin’ fast coming up with Alvin Lee of Ten Years After.

Thanks fwi, you were lightin’ fast in answering A.L. correctly to the hidden rock band name game. Woodstock propelled Alvin Lee and Ten Years Later into music history.

Fantastic photos 66hemiwagon! Those are a awesome highlight to this story and something I hoped would happen. Keep them coming, pictures, racing stories with John Comstock from NSS Guy and any info about Paul Goldsmith who drove in and raced from the ‘64 crewcab hauler. And let’s not forget the spring board into all of this, More American Graffiti!! Pat 0’brien watched this movie and instantly was thunder struck by the colorful ‘63 Belvedere. Fast forward to 2005 at the Monster Mopar Weekend and the Belve & Pat O’ come face to face. John Comstock is driving the dickens out of the Omaha Orange Plymouth, knocking out all he faced that weekend. Pat and John did chat at that event. There are some Signatures under the trunk lid now including Mr. Comstock, Milner from Graffiti and even the crewcab now sports Mr. Paul Goldsmith ‘John Handcock’ on the glovebox cover.
Now I’m taking this story into a freeze frame, brakes are locked, smoke is bellowing from all corners of this ride as the 180* spin occurs. Below is Milner’s front engine dragster BUT behind that is a special primered Willys that is in the Bermuda Triangle too! Darn that will have to wait because I’m so tired. Well I’m going home, thanks all..
