The Fritz R/T is finally out of painters hell and safe at home. After telling this guy I plan to use PPG, he applied Dupont primer. Now I'm going to have to put sealer over that according to my paint supplier. This guy also told me that PPG does not make T5 Copper. Not true. So I'm glad I'm outa there and will take over from here. I'm happy as a pig in sh*t!
I'm building a body dolly cart for it rather than pay anywhere from $600 - 900 for one. I'm using 3/16 steel tubing and I don't think the ones I've seen online are that heavy duty. The wheels cost more than the steel.

Always feel good to be in control. It's time to do what you wanted to do a long time ago. Your turn to finish your project and nobody else can tell you what will be done and when it will be done.

Thanks, I really appreciate all the support, I take these cars very seriously and am sure the people on this forum share that feeling. I had a large deposit paid in advance while they took in years worth of collision work. Ins co. don't pay until the work is done which is a good incentive... so my money and the investment in this car were locked up until they could get around to it. Sorry for pissing and moaning, thanks for listening.

Nope nothing wrong with what you did and what you are about to do. You paid and they put you off. Well your money is as good as the insurance company. All I'm saying is your about to enjoy what you have always wanted to do. Good luck to the finish and always keep us updated.

Body Shop Hell.... Hate it... Glad you broke free....

Sam Kinison, probably the funniest comedian I've ever seen. Need a laugh? I either need one or a joint! Thanks for the comment! Body shop hell, it sucks something awful!

I've seen posts about people asking if other car owners had their parts end up with all kinds of bondo dust and overspray on them. Here are some photos of the condition of my original parts when I went to rescue my car. You can't see it because it had all kinds of stuff piled on top of it but my antenna was just dumped in that box. I'm lucky it didn't get bent. I had a lot of the parts that I have restored sitting in boxes on shelves at home so they were safe!

The perfect AC under dash control unit was loose in all that stuff.

Honestly your lucky those parts still exist.. Body Shop Hell eats small parts...

If your using PPG envirobase you will have to seal it for even coverage.. just incase there are any break throughs from sanding the primer.. I dont mind Duponts primer. its a direct to metal product.. as where PPGs stuff is not..

Nice Charger..

Mate, that's one reason why I've kept my car the original color and not repainted it as planned - I couldn't stand having it gone for maybe months and all the screw ups that would likely come. I recently had the hood painted, the car was only gone for 4 days, and it came back with an interior and once-detailed engine bay looking like it had been parked in the desert for 10 years.
I'd rather do a shop course on painting and learn to do it myself or employ a guy to come to my house to do it, than leave it with a body shop. If you find a reputable one, never let them go!

Sounds like you made a wise decision to get your car out of there. Also agree with the statement later on in this thread that you are lucky you got all your small parts back. Seems to be quite common for stuff like that to go missing. And you are correct that PPG still makes T5 copper, I recently painted my Bee that color.

I feel ya brother. Sucks when your pride and joy is mishandled by unappreciative people. I built mine with salvaged steel, cost me 45 bucks. The casters I dug out of the dumpster at work, (why they're kinda small but do the trick). Basically wanted to simulate the actual flex points in the chassis by using the existing K frame and rear spring mounts. Hey it works for me and I can tell ya it's nice to be able to move the car any which way you want.. by yourself.
Brut strength and shear stupidity prevails

I don't doubt what you're saying, it's a matter of what PPG will guarantee. I'm pissed that I told the guy not to paint it until he talked to me about my decision about which one I want to use. He said: that's not paint, it's primer! Not to mention he claims to have done body work to the quarters but doesn't have any photos.

Fritz is a very nice Charger, I'm fortunate to have such an original car to work on.

only if you have a contract with the jobber that supplies the product , is the only way they guarantee there product.
they always find a reason why something failed. And they would not accept it as a failure on there part. the only thing I dont like about ppg and I use it all the time , daily. Is its transparency. Alot of coats , a lot of dry time. , constantly checking for proper coverage , the key also is viscosity, making sure it dries properly, and the metallics lay flat and even. The crap is time consuming. More coats the longer the dry time prior to clear. Then that **** is another story.

Couldn't keep the original paint. I want a screaming paint job and the original was not in good condition. I know what you mean - I picked up the front grill and headlight frame a couple of mos ago. Apparently it's too much trouble to lay a piece of plastic over it because it had so much dust etc on it, it was a different color. A friend of mine arranged for me to work with a painter in a body shop for six mos to learn how to do body and paint. Watching youtube helps a lot as well and the actual experience made it easy to understand. If you've ever detailed a grill like this, you know what a pain in the *** it is to deal with that "waffle" pattern. I have completely removed the trim and polished it, which shops usually won't do and if they did, you're nose would bleed for a week.

The bottom of the I beam was dented, maybe from installing the bumper. I knocked the dents out and then polished it.

So there is no anodizing on the trim right? You polished it off. Wont polished aluminum tarnish, or oxidize?

Yes, it will. There are several products available that will protect the aluminum such as: Everbrite, Sharkhide, and others. It can also be reanodized.
