The funny sides are in my "members projects" section. https://www.forbbodiesonly.com/mopa...et-the-wanna-bee-or-wanna-b-r-t.171057/page-3

..but the Voodoo cam..Elgin lifters..and Comp cams Chain made it through break in.

Secret recipe was good ole VR1 and a tube of Lunatis " Driven" special sauce on the side and a bottle of Lunati cam additive.

Now that she lived through that...time to go through those heads...and put em on with the headers, RPM, bigger carb....and new 2.5" exhaust system
Heck I better order my transgo kit too.

The last engine we built was a 318 with good cam, 340 X heads, & 340 4bbl intake. The aim was only to make 340 advertised HP, which was accomplished easily. Everything had the proper assembly lube ect. We broke it in with the good old VR1 racing oil only, nothing else. The young guy we did it for has ran the crap out of it and it is now in his second vehicle as he destroyed the first one. The part of the break in we did follow was the 2500 rpms for 30 minutes on initial startup. Truthfully it was an experiment to see if new cams were as bad as most everyone was saying at the time.

The cam break in "experience" always has me nervous too.
I lost 3 cams in the past 14 years but those 3 were in a 4 year period before:
A) Widespread knowledge of proper oil needed for classic cars.
B) Comp Cams break in supplement.
C) My membership to internet forums with lots of helpful people to guide my decisions.
The last 2 cams I broke in have had Howards solid lifters with the .012 EDM hole for direct oiling.

I read about the EDM tappets...but this batch of Elgins I got looked real good...and the cam was basicly free (Amazon mishap of mislabeling)...I just ordered another batch of the Elgins as back up shelf space users. They were Hecho en Mexico...a few years ago...but I trust em..I pulled each of them apart and they were nothing but clean...so I'm happy.
My 440 on the other hand is getting a roller.

I have used Valvoline VR1 for my FT 440+6 since I got my Roadrunner.
I added Lucas Break In additive to that to break in 16 new lifters, using the 2,500 variable (+/- 200 RPM method).
PERFECT!

Well those 2bbl heads and SP2P manifold are really dragging this engine down....its got velocity in buckets...just no flow! Lol.
I'm not gonna bother tuning the carb to this set up as it's not going on the road till the end of May at the earliest...good chance I'll have the heads and manifold ported by then. I'm going to try the 600 Edelbroke....but that 3310 Holley I have may be needed with the added flow of the RPM heads and manifold.

The SP2P intake is a piece of **** in almost every application OTHER than idle to 2500 rpm cruising.
With ports small enough to be blocked by a grape, they flow less than an 87 year old man with prostate trouble. I drug one from swap meet to swap meet with a $75 tag on it and finally had to drop the price to $40 just to get rid of it.

My plan is to let the 13 year old learn how to gasket match with it.
Seems like a fitting ending....Edelbrock made it to learn what not to do....I'll let the 13year old do the same...nothing teaches better than mistakes!

I almost put a regular performer I have sitting around on when I saw how much smaller the SP2P ports were compared to the 2bbl head intake gasket....the relationship of wasted space on that was worse then a 4bbl head intake gasket to an unported Performer...pretty sure a snap pea would clog it almost completely.

I always break in my more radical hydraulic f.t. cams in without the inner springs, outers only with high zinc additives. Once broke in I add the inner springs back in. Never wiped a cam lobe in my life. Oh yeah, I also pay the extra $100.00 or so to have Comp nitride the cores. Takes a couple of weeks extra to get though.

Nitriding is a nice option...but when the cam is advertised on Amazon for 50 bucks....and you end up getting it for free because of their mislabeling, and it's one of Harold's designs...that's a gift horse!...er gift horse..power?

And also exactly why I broke it in with the well worn 2bbl heads and old rockers...I'm sure those springs are way more supple than the new set of beehives that are going into my Eddies.

I used an SP2P on a motorhome with a 318.... For that application it actually worked pretty well... But that's about the only place I'd use it...

I broke in my solid lifter 318 poly with Lucas Break-in oil plus a bottle of Schneider cam break-in additive (their cam). Zero issues.

Broke in my solid lifter 440 with Driven BR-30. No issues and the break-in wasn't ideal as I had to stop to put out a plug wire fire lol.
