Camshaft selection for Mild 440?

Check out Howards Cams. They have a selection called "Max Certified" in the cam/lifter packages. They run them through an additional cerification process to ensure the QC of the items. This line of units gets a 5 year, no questions asked warranty. I'd been looking at one of their other units for the 440 I'm putting together for my 67 wagon. When I saw and verified that the unit I was wanting, Torque Monster, was in this selection too, I ordered it. Have not run it yet in case anyone asks. Next year sometime. Check them out.

They have a few good looking small block street cams I see. Thanks for the tip.

factory converter? or are you running a higher stall
It is pretty duration heavy. 298/303. Fair idle 2-5500 range. 2000 rom converter and gearing recommended.

But, lobe separation is 114°

Summit 6400 is a good mild cam.

I'm using the 6401 which requires a little heavier spring rate. They suggest a 2k stall converter and a low gear but im not and it preforms well. Great cam for the street.

I have 3.73 in my duster right now but i was planning on swapping to something more like 3.23 for the 440 since its just gonna burn the tires off with 3.73 anyway :D

I am surprised that cam does not have a little more lift to go along with increased duration. I think the Chrysler Magnum cam had lobe separation down near 110 degrees to help with good vacuum for power brakes.
Chrysler always used a 11 3/4" converter behind the 440, no matter the application. They must have figured the 440 had lots of low end torque without a looser converter. When I put my R/T together, I used the smaller factory 10 3/4" unit, normally used with 383 HP and Hemi, behind my 440. I like it. At the time, around 1990, you could buy this converter from parts jobbers like Car Quest for $100.00. The good old days.
I also put the car together with 3.91 gears. But, with looser converter and big torque, the car was stupid. I quickly changed to 3.23's, and life is good.

Yeah i think the 3.23s are gonna be the route to go.

I used a Crane HMV278 in my old 400. That cam had great street manners and power. The summit 6401 is almost an exact copy of that cam 222/234 duration at .050 if I recall correctly.
Can't go wrong with the old Crane " Magic cam", a profile that flat out works. The 6401 specs are very close.

Mopar magnum cam is 115lsa with 2 degrees of advance ground into it. 6401 cam is 114lsa with 2 degrees advance ground into it. 6401 has 10 degrèes more duration at .050", and .200" lift. The 6401 is a solid step more cam than the magnum. The magnum is not 268/284 duration. It has long closing ramps and when measured ar .006" lift it"s 276/292. Asymetircal lobes.

had the crane in a 67 RT years ago in a rebuilt engine when I bought the car. stock exhaust manifolds 3.23 gears. no bottom end. it would pull somewhat in the upper rpms. it ruined the torque of the 440. stock HP cams were 212-221 duration @50. yes 10 degrees more than stock. the crane cam is on a 115 LSA which also kills the bottom end

If you're losing torque with the Crane or 6401 Summit cam in a 440, they are installed wrong.
The old magic cam was a tire fryer.

I have ran a few Hughes Engines cams that make good power.
