Flat Orange General Lee? Opinions.

I`ll say I am not a big fan of flat/matte paint but in this case I think it will be cool because it`ll be different, both paint and year wise, and I am a fan of seeing something different instead of rows of cars all done in similar ways with the same boring Rallye wheels.

No offense, but grow up. I’ve had multiple 68-69 Chargers over the years and the General Lee and Dukes comments from others got old quick. I still love the show and still find it entertaining, but Jesus, the show hit the air almost 47 years ago, and went off the air over 40 years ago. Let it go. Enough Chargers have been butchered to make TV clone cars, and 99% of them aren’t done correctly/screen accurate. Instead of copying someone else’s idea, how about you actually build the car and make it something enjoyable to see and appreciate? You go to a Mopar show with a 70 GL clone and you’ll not only get your *** reamed for ruining a 70 Charger, but also for making an incorrect clone. IMO, the only GLs worth looking at in 2025 are one of the original 17 WB cars that were purchased in 1991. I walk right past clones at car shows anymore.
Not true, my friends 70 Charger R/T General Lee clone gets more attention than any other Mopar I have ever been in. From college girls flashing boobs at us to being stuck at gas station stops for an hour while people take pictures and their kids sit in the car. He took his Dart on a cross country trip because it would take months if he took the General Lee,with people who want to be around the car.

Or get a Mini Cooper with a British flag on the roof. Some people don't know the difference.

Have to agree with Chargervert.. I work on a friend of mines General Lee, and when I drive around in it , it's celebrity time. Stopped in at a store once and this guy came over ( while the store owner was out talking about it) and he almost starts bawling. Him and his deceased mom used to watch when he was little. It hit him hard. He loved it

As a 1970 Charger owner since the mid-80's, I got very tired of the inevitable comments, "You should paint that orange and put the Confederate flag on the roof!" Um...no thanks. Maybe almost as annoying as owning a Buick Grand National and having people say "Nice Monte Carlo!"

Most people that are not car people only notice the overall shape of the car, the color, the numbers on the doors and the flag on the roof.
The front bumper and grille are noticed immediately by guys like us but most people don't care.
Years ago I had a Camaro that was lowered and painted in a Monochromatic style. It was popular in the late 80s to paint the bumpers and trim all the same color as the car. Sometimes when I was out in the car, I'd get suggestions from others on how I should have jacked up the back end and put Cragars and N-50-15s on it or how I needed tinted windows or some other thing. It got to where I'd tell them to bring their car over and let me tell them what I think they should do with their car.
The fact is, YOUR opinion of what I do to my car does not matter, especially since I never asked for it.
The OP asked about the idea of doing a FLAT/matte paint job. He didn't ask for people to be rude about the idea.
Telling the guy to "grow up" ? Really? You think the owner will care if you walk past it at a car show ?

He will after a while. Like I said, take a 70 GL to a Mopar show and see what happens. After the kids and toothless hicks get done drooling over it, then what? Even at non-Mopar events, you’d be surprised at the people that notice there is something “off” about the car. Doesn’t matter to me though. People that have GLs need to have thick skin. I’ve had multiple 68-69 Chargers and the General Lee comments were nauseating. One was B5, one was Y2, one was SS1, one was F5, one was X9. Still got idiotic GL comments. I didn’t know people on this site were so fragile, opinions couldn’t be shared without the possibility of destroying someone’s feelings.

if I was to score a base level Charger; I'd build a Dirty Mary car........ I've never seen one of those

I'd even be tempted to do it to a real R/T :poke:

Most guys I know don't give a **** about what others will think of their car at a car show or whether they will get a trophy or not.
I don't. My friends don't and some of them have stunning cars.
I'll bring my cars to a show just to shoot the breeze with other car guys and walk the show looking at other cars.
If someone isn't impressed with my car or just ignores it, he'd be an idiot to think it matters to me at all.
If the OP does decide to paint up his car to look like a General Lee, I'm sure he will encounter more positive responses than negative.
A car like that is hard to hide though. You will find it quickly in a parking lot, you will be wise to obey traffic laws too....

I'm with you, I build em for me, the way I want.
However, I can't see anybody building a GL that DOESNT want to be noticed and talked about. Therefore I think it matters to him. Heck, he asked if he could get away (assuming with his anticipated critics) with using flat paint!
I think you are right about the positive responses. He just won't get one from me. And if he puts the flag on the roof, he might run into more unfavorable responses than he wants.

My friend has had his at every Mopar show on the east coast as well as the Mopar Nationals, and on the Hot Rod power tour twice, and never got a bad word from anyone.
