STOCKTON, Calif. -- The father of a soldier who was killed last weekend in Afghanistan was disappointed and hurt after airline passengers booed him and his family as they flew to meet his son's remains.

Stewart Perry, an ex-Marine who lives in Stockton, said the ordeal left him feeling disrespected.

"It was really disgusting on the passengers' part," he said Friday.

His son, Sgt. John Perry, was one of two killed in an explosion at a United States airbase on Nov. 12. He was honored at a memorial service in Lodi on Thursday and will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

John Perry, 30, and Pfc. Tyler R. Iubelt of Tamaroa, Illinois, died from their injuries after the attack by an apparent suicide bomber at the Bagram Airfield at about 5:30 a.m. local time.

The Department of Defense said this week that the blast also took the lives of two U.S. contractors working on the base. Sixteen other U.S. service members and one Polish soldier participating in a NATO mission were wounded.

Perry was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Special Troops Battalion, 1st Sustainment Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. He was at the base supporting Operation Freedom's Sentinel.

An avid runner, he had been preparing to participate in a 5K run at the base in northeast Afghanistan as part of a post-Veterans Day activity to benefit disabled veterans.

Stewart Perry said he, his wife, Kathy, and daughter were flying on an American Airlines flight from Sacramento on Monday to Philadelphia, with a quick transfer in Phoenix. From Philadelphia, they traveled to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to receive his son's remains.

For unknown reasons, Perry said, the flight to Phoenix was 45 minutes late. The crew feared the delay might cause the Perrys miss their connecting flight.

So, when the plane landed in Phoenix, the captain made an announcement for all passengers to remain seated and to let a "special military family" exit the aircraft first, Perry said.

Several passengers in first class began to boo and complain, Perry said.

"Some people were saying 'This is just baloney,' and 'I paid for first-class for this?' "

He said American Airlines "did everything they could" to accommodate his family.

Perry and his family made their connecting flight, and the pilot in Phoenix stayed at the gate for 40 minutes to make sure they made it on board.

Perry said he does not know if the passengers from Sacramento knew there was a Gold Star family on board, nor does he know if there was a similar reaction from people sitting in coach.

"It was just disgusting behavior from people in first class; it was terrible to see," Perry said. "You could see the disappointment from the flight crew."

The real focus, Perry said, should be on the heroics of his son. The husband and father of two young children died a hero.

"He made a decision that saved a lot of people," Perry said. "I was told that he was found protecting a female soldier. ... He didn't get to live a full life

Diappointing.

People should think there could be a good reason for a decision to let someone off a plane first.

I find this very hard to believe. Back in my era (Viet Nam) I could believe it, but not today.

Seems to me that ignorance comes with wealth. Me, I'd have been giving the first class section the finger as I walked past the doorway

You are right, ignorance is independent of economic standing.

I trust there were also plenty of people on that plane that recognized and respected the situation.

That pisses me off to no end. That happened in my backyard and if I had names and addresses, I'd pay a special visit to each & every a-hole that boo'ed. I'm f'n livid right now!

I would have spit on the booing ********. Not as a family member....just as another passenger.

I can hear those punks now....I am in first class.....I paid more for this seat....I have to wait....when I get off this plane I am going to demand a refund.....boo hoo hoo

I would have had a nice chat with those losers........

people have no perspective, lack of empathy for others. With no draft and wars that go on for years it is easy for people to ignore. I was in san Antonio this summer and met a German bundeswehr combat nurse who was there for training. Apparently they have virtual reality training for medics. I asked her where she was going and she told me she was heading back to Afghanistan for the 2nd time. The German public has forgotten the German soldiers that were still there as part of the NATO mission that started all the way back in 2001. She said that she felt bad for the afghans that just want to be free of the Taliban and it was tough to do your job when it goes mostly unrecognized in your own country. I don't think Afghanistan was mentioned once in the presidential campaign other than talk about NATO countries pulling their own weight. I thanked her for her service and she caught the connecting flight. I felt bad but as a civilian it is difficult to rationalize these things. Just have to be humble and realize the world does not revolve around any one of us, to give respect where its due.

I tell you what, if I was "dad", I would have lost it and started cracking skulls! Those people that booed, don't deserve to breath the same air as the rest of us!

Just another example of some people that think they are "special". Maybe it's poor parenting or maybe they didn't get their asses kicked often enough. JMHFO.

Thanks goes to American Airlines for their support and recognition of this father's situation. The booing passengers can exit to the rear, at 20,000 ft.

I agree with what everyone is saying. No - absolutely no excuses to react in that manner to a minor inconvenience. People usually applaud situations such as this...

I probably would have gone to jail, those dicks that would boo a military family, even more so a Gold Star family, deserve to have their asses beat!

When I was a teenager in the 80's I became friends with a Vietnam vet who lost his legs. He had to wheel himself around on a cart because he couldn't be set in a wheel chair. He told me stories about what happened to his platoon. I lost touch with Sam many years ago, but I developed way more respect for those who served as a teen. Those people on the plane probably enjoy their freedom and money and have no idea of the brave souls who have sacrificed for them.

Obviously just another brain dead person/s (WAY TOO MANY NOW'DAYS). It really doesn't matter the reason for someone leaving prior to everyone else.
If the Captain requests it then a NORMAL person would assume it is a very good reason and would shut the hell up and let them off first.
Myself, I fly constantly and if I had a first class seat and knew that a father was flying to see his dead son
I would let him have my seat.

I wasn't there but I have to think that these people didn't know what was happening and/or didn't know the whole story. Hopefully as the captain on that flight something was said. Personally if I informed the passengers what was happening and there was booing, I'd go back there and start kicking people off the jet. Yes, captains have that power.

Sad, sad. I hope the asswipes had somebody explain to them wtf was going on......knock those spoiled assed smug fux into their place. Embarrass & humiliate the **** out of them!
