So, I started up the 340 today and got a horrible squealing sound from the front of the motor. Sounded like bad/loose belts on steroids or the water pump was about to explode. It went away in about 10-15 seconds before I could pinpoint it. I drove around and got the same squealing -- but not nearly as bad -- when I would lightly accelerate. I pulled over, popped hood to narrow it down and, of course, the sound went away before I could get there. But just about everytime I lightly accelerate I got the squeal.
When I gave it more gas, the squeal either went away or I couldn't hear it over the motor.
My water pump is old and it's probably time for a new one, but I'm trying to narrow it down. The last four times I started it, no squeal at all. When I raise RPMs in park, no squeal.
The belts are tight and relatively new but I guess it's possible they are the culprit. Oil pressure is good, oil is clean and no fluids are leaking underneath (or out the water pump). Power steering fluid is filled. Any suggestions based on the fact it mainly happens at light acceleration? The fact it only happens when the motor is under a load has me a bit confused -- and maybe concerned. Only once did it happen right at start up and I can't get it to squeal at idle, whether in park or drive, to locate it. Thanks
Update: My battery isn't charging, so I think I know my problem
