I have resisted the advice to paint the car matte black. It seems like it has been overdone since all the cars from the Fast and Furious and Blade movies, but what if....

It is the opposite color scheme of the red car....

How about with black wheels?

I think the black steel wheels do give the car a tough, all-business look.

Well I’m always cool with a flat/satin black, and if it’s done as the opposite of the red car that would be pretty cool. Two cars with different purposes but kind of tied together by the paint scheme.
My car would be all flat black but the previous owner went to the trouble of cleaning the vinyl junk and painting it so it’s held me off. Maybe next summer.

Satin paint can be hard to take care of. Keeping the even "sheen" is not easy. It isn't like a shiny surface where you can use a wax like cleaner to bring the shine back up.
I've painted several cars black but never owned one for myself.

I’ve owned several black cars, from shiny factory to rattle can flat, all a pain in the butt to keep nice and clean.
I like the flat black rattle look for my car but if it ever gets a real paint job, flat, satin or gloss, it won’t be in black. I like the look but hate the upkeep.

Greg, if you decide to try satin black use SEM trim black, it's the easiest satin black to care for I've ever used and if it gets a scrape you can touch it up easily, the stuff can be spot repaired and the repair is invisible...

Weird, I just opened the trim black link, it worked for me.... End of the day, it was just an Amazon link for a gallon of SEM Trim Black, about $165....

Then I opened the flaring tool, initially I got a white screen, took about 10 seconds & the tool popped up..

It seems to me the Jigsaw's current theme is "beater/ barn find/ Joe Dirt", like it was pulled out of a barn and made to work again well enough to be back on the road. If you paint it, it will get a new theme (nothing wrong with that), but the barn find look will go away.
My personal opinion is that the patina thing has been overdone. It no longer surprises people when the exterior looks beat up and the rest of the car works well.

I am a fan of making Jigsaw have a NASCAR theme. I think that will be much more interesting.

i like your nascar theme idea but i wouldn't paint a number or words. i want another set of wheels for my charger and came across this picture of a B body and i think it looks incredible. deep deep blue, cop wheels, RWL tires.

the rear quarter exhaust cutout with trim is icing on the cake

Awhile back when I mocked up the van axle using these 16” wheels, I had a 74 7/8” overall width from the outside of the tire to outside the other tire. I knew that would be too wide with these wheels. I had measured the width between the quarter panel flanges left to right..



I came up with this…

74 inches even.
I’ve been pondering how to get a wider axle in here that will allow the use of these wheels with such a deep backspacing. They are 16x10 with 6 1/4”’back spacing. It takes a 3/4” spacer just to get the wheels on the car and even that leaves a gap to the leafs you can measure with a feeler gauge. It seems weird to change an axle to use these wheels but with some judicious planning, I think I can do it cheaper than by buying new wheels.

Ta-Da ! I found a 71 Polara in a junkyard. They use a 30 3/4” axle shaft which will make the overall axle track width 3 1/4” wider. Axle housing, $106.

I had a pair of 30 3/4” shafts here with good tapered bearings. FREE. I’ll retain the brakes and 3.91 diff, FREE.
This means I can use this axle to accommodate these wheels and only spend a little over $100.

I have to add 1/4” per side since this mock up has no backing plates or drums…

That means that each side is 1/4” over the limit. I could roll up the edges of the flanges….

That would open up some room but things are not as dire as they seem.

These tires are 295-50-16. I’m now looking to use a 255-50-16. That is 40 millimeters narrower, 20 each side of center. 20 millimeters is what…a strong 3/4” ? That difference would clear the body as it is by 1/2” each side.

Kern you are probably already aware this, but you will have to relocate the spring perches. The Polara housing has the perches at 47.3" inches (center to center) apart. Your Charger has it's at 44.0". That being said for anyone else doing this mod, Dodge 1/2-ton pick ups of this same era use this same width of 8.75" housing and 47.3" perch spacing but have their perches welded to the top of the housing.

I have a welder and more guts than brains. I will not be deterred.
