Lost my good friend and at my fault

Hang in there bud.....**** happens ( and I am NOT trying to make light of the situation or being sarcastic...just to be clear), it was an accident....out of YOUR control....our pets are curious and sometimes it gets them into trouble. I am sure he had a great life and was well looked after by you and your family, take some time, look around... I am sure you will find the next one that will melt your heart and fit right in with everyone. Never easy to lose anyone, pets seem as hard, if not harder....just that bond we develope over time with them. Please post some more pics...always great to see our fur babies and their involvement in our lives!
I didn't think it was a concern, he was there when I dug it up and as soon as he got a whiff he was gone! Here's a few more.

I lost my best friend a few weeks ago. He was a rescue cat from a family trouble.

The title of this thread is why I am bringing this up here.

His passing was indeed a decision I had to make.--My "fault"?
He was more like a dog in personality than a cat. He followed me in my every step when I was home. He slept on my face to stop me from snoring. He was my best friend for 7 years.

He was 8 years old and in great health. One morning I found him in big pain without the use of his back legs.--This was a bad day finding emergency care at 6am. The bottom line came fast.--He had a blood clot from a heart condition that blocked flow to his back legs. He would never regain use of his legs and more clots were on the way.
His passing was "my fault" I had him put down. He being a cat would fail in a long and slow way if I had not.
I have lost many pets and friends over the years and they are all hard to get through. This one was as hard as they get for me. He was a picture of health and a few hours later I had to give him up.----My fault?--My last haunting memory of him was his crying out to me on the way to the vet.

I know what your saying, had to put my Rott down last year. She was 12 which is very old for a Rott but was still very healthy. One night she woke us up knocking things over, went down to find her acting like a drunk but there wasn't anything there (in her head).... think she had a stroke? She went from a total stud of an old Rott to being blank in that one night. That was easier to swallow knowing she lived well past expected and was in misery. Can't do much about situations like that accept have mercy on them.

I agree. I am reminded of my pet friends over the years that just disappeared. (many) .They often go away and hide if they can when they die.
This time I was home and was able to close the misery for my friend but in helping him in his time of need I am left with a reality check.--Did I make the right move at the right time?--Is this about them or me?--

Sorry for your loss. My brother lost his young Australian Shepard 2 months ago in a similar manner.
We have an outdoor storage facility for manure. AKA a "cement pond". It's 10 feet deep and gets pumped dry once a year. It normally has a tall chain link fence around it to prevent critters or children from getting in it. However in order to pump it annually we must remove a small portion of the fence to drop the pump in. The process takes maybe 2 days.
Long story short his dog came up missing, we found his collar and some fur in the pump. Very sad.
It was tragic, the older more experienced dogs stay away from such things but the young one let curiosity get the better of him.
Don't beat yourself up too badly. At least it wasn't a kid and that's a mistake that won't be made again. Really it was a one-offer. It happens.....

Man that's a rough one! I would be messed up more then I am if I lost one of my kids like that! Not your fault though you didn't throw him in ! Stuff happens I try like hell to protect my kids the best I can but I know one day the end will come and not much I can do about it ! The word isn't replace him you can never replace a dog I found out no dog will ever be like another I had a great old German Shepard he passed it was rough I got a German Shepard puppy a year later for free and I thought well he might be like Sarge ! Nope the new dog was a complete *** hole ! I got a mastiff pup years later from the pound he is fantastic I swear it's my old dog but who knows ! Watch the movie dogs purpose! It's good gets you thinking!

747...my mother in law is coming next week. Can you explain in detail and perhaps draw diagrams of exactly what happened so I can ensure a similar tragedy is avoid over here?

Also, very sorry for your loss.

Mother in law.... hmmmm?

Sorry for your kloss Dev. I watched the movie "A Dog's Purpose" last night. Don't know if you have seen it yet and it is a tear jerker for all of us dog loving saps on here, but I believe it to be true as I have had dogs since I was 8 years old and I truly believe they come back in some ways. Your dog will find you again.

There are things we can't control.
I had a dog struck by lightning on a cable run.
Sad.

But I think that "accidents" in aviation are caused by more than one thing.
It's a chain of events. Like in flight 401.
I only point that out because I (probably) killed one of our Chihuahuas by doing something with out thinking.
I felt badly because of it. But the dog did something too.
Head trauma.
She died later. Seizures and such. Final cause undetermined
Yet, I'm supposed to be smarter than a dog.
(Some people may disagree that that last part.)

My word, a lot of bad things are happening to dogs lately. I got a call from my brother yesterday and his son's dog fell or jumped out of the bed of his truck and died over the weekend. At first I was so angry I couldn't stand it. I had told my nephew on several occasions not to let the dog ride in the bed of the truck because you never know what they might do. Now the dog is dead. The only consolation for me is that I almost called my nephew to tell him he was a dumb ***, but I didn't. It would not have changed the situation and might have hurt our relationship. He's a good kid who was irresponsible toward his dog. I think he learned a hard lesson.

Thanks 69a100 for understanding and yes it's screwed up. I can easily handle a dog passing from age but drowning in poo is a bit tough to swallow!
****, How do you think the dog must feel? Not to crack a joke but that's a shitty situation to be in.

Sorry for your loss man. My Boston terrier is my best friend and has never left my side. He's 10 years old and I cant imagine how life will change when he's no longer around...hang in there.

The picture of him struggling to stay afloat has played out in my head which is why it's so bothersome, he didn't deserve to go out like that. Wish he would have slept in that day.

I hope you can make peace with the good boy, I'm sure he's already forgiven you. The hard part is forgiving yourself but ya gotta make sure you figure out how to.

It was a mistake and a terrible accident, but your dog knows your heart and he wouldn't want you to torment yourself over this.
